How Crowdfunder is making a real difference in community sports around the UK

It remains a challenging time for grassroots sports in the UK. A recent BBC report found that 67% of communities expect young people to be forced out of activities over the next six months.
We’re enabling a collective response on Crowdfunder. We have £10 million of extra funding from our funding partners to support sporting communities through crowdfunding, depending on what they’re doing and where they’re doing it. Here are just five of the latest success stories from every corner of the UK.
A skatepark in Cornwall
A Cornish community is coming together through Crowdfunder, working to build a brilliant new skatepark for young people. They are offering a fantastic range of rewards to encourage support and are closing in on their £60,000 stretch target, thanks in part to extra funding from British Cycling, Sport England, Cornwall Council and Devon and Cornwall Police. Now that’s what we call ‘a crowd’.

A cycling track in Manchester
We work with British Cycling to make up to £15,000 available for cycling facilities around the UK. Places like Wythenshawe Park in south Manchester, re-opened by international cyclists Maddie Leech and Jess Roberts who understand the importance of having a place to ride as a young rider. A thriving grassroots scene will produce the stars of the future.

A safe play space in North Yorkshire
Tadcaster Barn is one of the few safe play spaces for young people in the market town, hosting outdoor activities and holiday clubs to improve physical and mental wellbeing as well as reducing isolation in the wake of Covid-19. They’re now closing in on their stretch-target of £55,000 to revamp the facility after big pledges from our funding partners at British Cycling, Sport England, Power to Change, National Emergencies Trust and British Airways. That’s a lasting legacy through ‘the crowd’.

A football club in Wales
Our partners at Sport Wales recently supported the successful campaign by Tonyrefail Boys and Girls Club to improve the facilities at their home at Tyn Y Bryn Park. Their pledge of £9,000 encouraged 200 members of their community to raise more than £55,000, resulting in a new 100-seater stand and dugouts. A real success story.

Primary schools in Northern Ireland
In a little over 12 months, we have enabled more than £1 million to be pledged to sports clubs and organisations in Northern Ireland. Projects such as the Healthy Kidz, delivering fun and engaging physical activity sessions in primary schools throughout the country. In the end they raised more than £23,000 with extra funding from our partners at Sport Northern Ireland and British Airways. It’s another fantastic example of our platform as an effective community engagement tool.
