Hi, we're Frome Skatepark Project, a volunteer community group set up for one reason - to fundraise for a new skatepark in Frome.
Why do we need a new skatepark?
The current park is no longer fit for purpose. The obstacles are nearing the end of their life with chipped ramps, surface wear and sharp edges.
The current park was never designed in conjunction with skaters, scooters or BMXers, so there is no flow through the park with obstacles too close together, or orientated in a way that limits lines through the park.
As a result it's not challenging enough for experienced riders, and potentially dangerous for new riders.
Furthermore the park was never designed with wheelchair users in mind and it is inaccessible.
When it was built, the town was smaller. It’s the busiest part of the park by far. Now on busy days the skatepark can be jam-packed – diminishing enjoyment for many.
Smaller towns and villages in our area have better facilities. A town the size of Frome deserves a modern skatepark.
Together we have an opportunity to create a brilliant facility that will serve the people of Frome and the surrounding villages for many years to come! Maybe something like this early concept...
What are the benefits of a new skatepark for Frome?
Wheeled sports are for everyone – not just teenage boys! A new skatepark will benefit people of all ages in Frome.
Wheeled sports get people active, away from screens and off the sofa to help tackle obesity.
Low barrier to participation – most kids have a skateboard, scooter, bike or roller skates. There's no need for a team or expensive club – vital when cost of living has hit so many families, so hard.
Positive for mental health. Physical activity and the sense of belonging that comes with interacting with a supportive community of like-minded people is invaluable. PLUS! wheeled sports are a great outlet for expressing yourself.
Brilliant for personal development. Young people support each other and take turns. Skateparks can be a validating place. A space to be with peers can be a lifeline for some young people.
Reduces anti-social behaviour. The biggest driver of antisocial behaviour is having nothing to do, a new skatepark, free at the point of use, will be a place to hang out, have fun and be proud of.
Please support the Frome Skatepark Project with a donation if you're able. Thank you.
