The Cornish Barbarians Pilot Gig Club are rowing a coastal marathon to fundraise for Georgia's Voice's new Lifesaving Hub for Young Women

Cornish Babarians Pilot Gig Club: Marathon Row 2024

On the 10th of August 2024, we – the Cornish Barbarians Pilot Gig Club Committee – will once again be inviting some legendary Gig Rowers from 29 clubs across the country to Earn Their Stripes, to become a Cornish Barbarian and to complete our epic Cornish Barbarians Summer Marathon Row from Pentewan in Cornwall.

Our 2024 cohort of rowers and coxswains will be on the water at the crack of dawn and will row 26.2 coastal miles right through the day, with a crew that they have never rowed with before and through absolutely everything that the Cornish elements can throw at them.

It'll be a mentally and physically arduous challenge, but our rowers will be doing it all for an incredible cause: supporting Georgia’s Voice, the women’s suicide prevention and mental wellbeing charity, in their mission to raise critically needed funds to build a Lifesaving Hub for Young Women in Cornwall.

Georgia’s Voice’s support groups have already created a huge network of support and understanding for young women throughout Cornwall who are in need of a safe place to turn.

The safe spaces that they currently provide enable young women to talk and to really be listened to – with empathy, with understanding and without judgement.

However, at a time where the suicide rates in young women under 24 in the UK are the highest since ONS records began in 1981, there is a critical need for a dedicated space in Cornwall where emotional support is readily available (as opposed to just during the times when Georgia’s Voice’s in-person or virtual support groups are run).

This is where Chy at the Village and The Village Kitchen will come in.

Known as the Georgia’s Voice Lifesaving Hub, Chy at the Village and The Village Kitchen will be a sanctuary for young women to come together, to receive emotional support, to build connections and to find their “village”.

Comprising a dedicated support hub and a café (the ongoing operation of which will sustainably support the hub), this will be the first facility of its kind in Cornwall for young women to learn new skills, express themselves, discover ways to nourish and nurture their mental health and – of course – talk… and be listened to.

Currently, when a young woman is in desperate need of support, they often can’t wait until the next scheduled in-person or virtual support meeting facilitied by Georgia’s Voice...

Once the lifesaving hub becomes a reality, there will always be a safe space in Cornwall that is accessible on the terms of those who need it the most.

Georgia’s Voice are raising £50,000 to make the Lifesaving Hub a reality, and every penny that our rowers raise with the Cornish Barbarians will contribute to their overall goal.

We're hoping that, in total, our 2024 Marathon Row will raise £10,000 towards Georgia's Voice's target. The really exciting news is that, as of the 6th of August 2024 (when this page was created), we'd already raised over £7,000 for Georgia's Voice – and, come the 7th of August, we'd raised over £9,000 once our individual rowers' pages were tallied up! SO we only need to reach £3,000 in the days leading up to Saturday the 10th of August and in the weeks after the event in order to smash our target.

If you know a rower who is participating in the Marathon Row 2024, please make sure you mention their name and wish them good luck in the comments section!

If you are here to support our event in general (as so many of you do every year), then thank you – we really appreciate everything you do for us and for our great causes.

By donating some money in support of this year's Cornish Barbarians Marathon Row, you’ll be directly helping to save lives of, and improve the futures for, young women throughout Cornwall. It's that simple.

Thank you so much for your support.
