I'm joining the Cornish Barbarians Pilot Gig Club to row a marathon to fundraise for Georgia's Voice new Lifesaving Hub for Young Women
I have been rowing for less than 3 years with PORTLAND GIG ROWING CLUB. I love the impact doing a sport with like minded people has had on me, both on and off the water. I recognise the need that we all have to be amongst people and the water is a an amazing place to on. I discovered a team known as the Cornish Gig Rowing team - a team made up of rowers from all over the country. I saw a post on about the great work the Cornish Barbarians do regarding fundraising and the efforts to raise awareness and funds for the GEORGIA'S VOICE charity. Confident I never succeed in a public ballot for anything - I threw my name into the hat! I did succeed- so here we go. It is my intention to support myself with generating the initial amount of cash required... however if you wish to add please support me in this effort - but please please please take awareness of the charity and the reasons for the charity as the main purpose for reading this post.
On the 10th August 2024, I will be joining gig rowers from across the country to become a CORNISH BARBARIAN and complete the epic Cornish Barbarian Summer Marathon Row.
I will be on the water at the crack of dawn and will row 26.2 coastal miles right through the day, with a crew I have never rowed before and a good chance in a seat I have not rowed before in ( gig rowers like their favoured sides and seats to row)... and will be expecting any form of Cornish weather. But however hard the challenge is - it will be worth every second of effort to raise funds for Georgia's Voice created to support suicide prevention and provide mental wellbeing for Young Women in Cornwall with their mission to raise much needed funds to build a Lifesaving Hub for young women in Cornwall.
Georgia's Voice support Groups have already created a huge network of support and understanding for young women throughout Cornwall who are in a need of a safe place to turn.
The safe spaces that Georgia's voice currently provide enable young women to talk and to be really listened to- with empathy, with understanding and without judgement.
However at a time where the suicide rates in young women under 24 in the UK are in the highest since ONS records began in 1981, there is a critical need for a dedicated space in Cornwall where emotional support is readily available.
This is where the CHY at the Village and the Village Kitchen will come in.
Known as the Georgia's Voice Lifesaving Hub, Chy at the Village and the Village Kitchen will be a sanctuary for young women to come together, to receive emotional support, to build connections and to find their 'village'.
Comprising a dedicated support hub and a café ( the ongoing operation of which will sustainably support the hub), this will be the first facility of its kind in Cornwall for young women to learn new skills, express themselves, discover ways to nourish and nature their mental health and of course - talk and be listened to.
Currently, when a young person is in desperate need of support, they can't often wait until the next scheduled in - person or virtual support meeting. Once the lifesaving hub becomes a reality there will be a safe space in Cornwall that is access able on the terms of those who need it the most.
Georgia's Voice are raising £50,000 to make the lifesaving Hub a reality, and every penny I raise with the Cornish Barbarians will go towards this.
Put simply, by donating some money in support of my Cornish Barbarians Marathon Row attempt, you will be directly supporting to save the life's of, and improve the futures for young women throughout Cornwall.
Thankyou for your time in reading this - I hope I have raised awareness. If you have got this far - and you are a non rower speculate if I will sit down for my post row cider - if you are a rower - you will know why I will standing up for several days
This project successfully funded on 23rd August 2024
