How we started
Founded as a collaboration between Action Asylum project, the British Red Cross and The Climbing Hangar, Refugees Rock has expanded from the original Liverpool group to operate across ten UK cities, helping over 500 participants build physical, mental and social wellbeing through climbing.
The project offers free monthly climbing sessions for asylum seekers and refugees who face severe restrictions on work and income. Supported by more than 100 Boulder Buddy volunteers, it offers a warm welcome, lots of fun and lasting connections with local communities.
Our locations
Our locations include: Bristol, Edinburgh, Ellesmere Port, Exeter, Leeds, Liverpool, Manchester, Sheffield and Swansea.
Recent milestones
In November 2024, Refugees Rock was the subject of the beautiful 'Finding Freedom' - a short film that premiered at Kendal Mountain Film Festival, and will be touring the UK in 2025.
And in January 2025, the project achieved charity status as a Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO). The new designation means we can access grants and fundraising opportunities to grow out network further and support many more people across the UK.
Our aim is to create a network of Refugees Rock clubs where people seeking sanctuary know they will be welcome to get active, have fun and be part of the community.
