To raise money to reopen the Langton Community Swimming Pool. Currently 1 in 3 Children are leaving Primary School unable to swim!

We're still collecting donations

On the 30th November 2022 we'd raised £5,255 with 166 supporters in 69 days. But as every pound matters, we're continuing to collect donations from supporters.

Who are we?

There has been a swimming pool on-site at Simon Langton Grammar School for Boys' since 1959. During the COVID pandemic the pool was forced to close.  Without the income stream to maintain the pool, it now needs significant refurbishment in order to make the pool operational again.

Community impact

The Langton Swimming Pool really is a community pool.  The pool is traditionally used by the students of the school to learn to swim and to educate them in basic life-saving skills for 10% of the pool's use.  The rest of the time, community groups including 19 local primary schools, 2 Universities several local sports clubs including a triathlon club, local residents and a Swim School based at the pool, all made use of this facility.  There is a particular demand for primary school aged children, due to a shortage of local swimming pools.

Why are we crowdfunding?

Sadly, the pool is in a state of disrepair and needs a significant refurbishment in order not only to get the pool operational, but to secure its long term viability.

Nationally, 1 in 3 children cannot swim and a staggering 40% are not offered school swimming.  This is despite 400 people drowning every year in the UK, and drowning being the 3rd most common cause of accidental death in children.

A 3rd of primary school children currently cannot safely and confidently access swimming pools, water parks, the sea or any other water-based activity.  Added to this, they are missing out on a life-long activity that improves individuals' health and wellbeing.

A spokeswoman for the Department for Education said: "Swimming is a compulsory part of the National Curriculum, and all primary schools have a duty to provide swimming lessons for their pupils. By the end of primary school, pupils must be taught to swim 25 metres unaided using recognised strokes on their front and back and use a range of personal survival skills."

This is all well and good, but without the availability of local pools this is not achievable.
