Aim

Power our investigations into the Hate Economy: help us expose the people profiting from spreading hate and division.

Expose the people profiting from hate

Charities targeted with threats and abuse. Islamophobic and antisemitic attacks on our streets. Migrants burnt out of their homes.

This rising division is fuelled by an online economy of hate, where social media platforms profit from racist misinformation, far-right influencers monetise division, and disinformation networks build vast audiences by spreading fear.

Meanwhile mainstream politicians battle it out to be the toughest on immigration, and a tech billionaire uses his social media platform to encourage race riots. All this toxicity is amplified by a media industry that seeks out the most sensationalist headlines to drive clicks and revenue.

This is the hate economy.

But it doesn’t have to be this way. As the UK’s largest nonprofit newsroom, we believe that journalism can change the story and be a force for good: not only through brave, fact-based reporting, but by working alongside people and communities, rather than simply writing about them.

We have already exposed how a far-right political party used AI-generated rapper Danny Bones to spread its message, and how overseas content creators are making money from producing anti-immigration videos. We’ve challenged harmful and inaccurate media coverage and revealed the threats and abuse fired at charities after a rightwing misinformation campaign.

But we must go further, much further.

A donation today will power our investigations into the people and networks driving and cashing in on online hate. Every donation you make will help, no matter how big or small.

The first £20,000 of donations that we receive will be doubled at no extra cost to you.

£20 could help cover the cost of meeting a source

£50 could help us analyse harmful social media content

£100 could help us obtain documents or data needed to expose who profits from division

£250 could support interviews with experts, campaigners or people affected by online hate

£500 could go towards funding a day of investigative reporting

£1,000 could support a deeper investigation into the people, companies or political groups profiting from outrage

Help us expose the hate economy and hold those profiting from division to account.
