The Star Inn & Penzance Brewing Co are about to be taken over by new faces.
The Star Inn & Penzance Brewing Co
Just off the A30 in the village of Crowlas, just 15 minutes up from Penzance sits the Star Inn. Bought by Pete Elvin and his partner Tracey in 1999, it quickly gained recognition by CAMRA as a real ale haven. Even being crowned best Cornwall pub on multiple occasions.
10 years after purchase, in the the pubs outhouses Penzance Brewing Co began. A multi award winning brewery and, again, CAMRA treasure. Their collection of beers remain very traditional; from a Mild to their Scilly Stout, IPA’s and pales to browns and bitters.
Though the pub has closed its doors since the passing of Peter Elvin, his brewery continues to operate under the expertise of its long standing brewer even producing a new beer in memorium.
Who's In?
Trystan-Ross and Daisy Pooley-Tolkien-Williams have just taken over The Star Inn and Penzance Brewing Co. The husband and wife team are returning to their Cornish roots bringing with them dedication to the community and the experience to really ensure the success of the pubs return to the parish.
Trystan has spent 17 years working in hospitality up and down the UK, with a decade spent in Michelin starred kitchens under the likes of Angela Hartnett Nieves Barragon Mohacho, Gary Foulkes and Sat Bains.
Daisy spent the best part of a decade living in the seaside university town of Falmouth, studying both her undergraduate and postgraduate degrees at the art school. During her time there she was a core team member of Hand Bar, one of Cornwall’s original specialty beer bars, and remains closely connected to the county’s hospitality scene.
Together they run family lifestyle brand Raising an Ally, where community and kindness are the founding and driving ethos. Something to be carried through into their takeover of The Star.
Bringing Back the Heart of the Community
Throughout the process of buying the businesses, it has been clear how important they are to the village and its surrounding area. Creating a strong bond with the locals who have been as much a part of the legacy of the last 25 years will be top of the list of priorities as they aim to develop the pub and put back into the local economy.
Keeping it Kernow
Ensuring Cornwall is celebrated through out is vital, with such a vibrant artisanal community throughout the county we have the perfect opportunity to celebrate this. From diversifying our beer menu to collaborating with other Cornish producers taking advantage of our proximity to the sea and the local farmers we hope to ensure that we can make this a coveted spot to enjoy what the abundant county of Cornwall has to offer.
Updating the Pub & Brewery
With new owners comes a new vision, and though the heart of the pub will remain the same evolution and adaptation will be needed to ensure the two brands remain relevant in the ever evolving hospitality scene.
One thing that can be guaranteed is the brewery team will be remaining the same.
Opening the Kitchen
A major planned update for The Star Inn is a food offering. Though limited, we will ensure our menu’s celebrate locally sourced ingredients.
Fish Fridays will be built around what is available direct from local day boats. While our Sunday Roast will boast higher welfare meats. Both with drinks pairings found in the Penzance Brewing Co stock and some of our other favourites from further afield.
We can't wait to reopen the doors and welcome everyone back.
