The Cartoon Museum champions cartoon and comic art, highlighting its value to culture and society. We want to create a world where everyone wants to pick up a pencil and draw, whatever their ability or background.
Our mission is to:
- Collect, conserve and provide access to Britain’s cartoon, caricature, animation and comic art heritage.
- Encourage participation in and raise awareness of a popular artform.
- Support new work by cartoonists and comics artists and champion Britain’s cartoon and comics communities.
We are the only dedicated cartoon museum in the UK, and work with partners and artists across the country. No other museum holds a collection that encompasses 350 years of British cartoon art from the mid-1700s up to the present day, including caricature, comics, gag cartoons, and satirical political cartooning – which is a genuinely native British artform that flourished as a result of free press laws. Cartoons speak truth to power, and can be enjoyed and utilised by anyone to share their ideas and stories.
Cartoons and comics are a highly popular and accessible artform – think Marvel, the Beano, manga, every UK newspaper, and what you see as you scroll down your Instagram or twitter feed - yet are historically overlooked by arts funding. We work closely with the artistic community through established and grassroots cartoon and comics organisations across the UK and Europe to advocate for their historic and current importance for all, and we hold regular exhibitions, event and learning programmes, artist partnerships, young artist competitions to share the work.
