The Council declared a climate emergency on 22 January 2019 and committed to facilitating the reduction of Cornwall’s carbon emissions to net-zero by 2030.
Following the success of the first #BackTheFuture LIVE event on 10 June, Cornwall Council and Crowdfunder are now encouraging any individuals, groups and organisations who are tackling Cornwall’s climate emergency to share their plans in response to the crisis, and how crowdfunding will play its part.
Ten successful entries will be chosen to get a slice of £30,000 in match funding from Cornwall Council to go towards a crowdfunding campaign.
They are looking for projects like #BackTheFuture LIVE winners, Love Land Community Field. Based in Penryn, the project aims to get residents closer to nature by growing food to support the local community; donating to the Falmouth Food Co-op Kitchen Project and providing meals to those isolating and shielding due to COVID-19. The £6,000 prize money they won will undoubtedly give them the necessary funds needed to achieve this goal.
The funding on offer is a great step towards reaching the county’s net-zero ambitions, and provides local climate projects with the opportunity to promote their work and get a financial boost to their plans for effective climate action. It’s also an opportunity to engage and educate the public on the current state of our climate, and how we can all help to reduce the carbon footprint.
Martyn Alvey, Cornwall Council’s cabinet portfolio holder for the environment and climate change commented: “We need our communities to work together and take action to lower carbon emissions. People can make a positive impact through crowdfunding and the funding available from Cornwall Council. If you have your own idea, there’s extra funding on offer on Crowdfunder to turn your idea into reality.”
Any projects with a planet positive idea that is ready to be taken to the next level is invited to share their idea and be in with a chance to share in £30k matched-funding.
