Over the past decade, Surplus to Purpose has turned food waste into hope.
Founded by Adam Smith, a chef who rebuilt his life after growing up in care, surviving addiction, and being declared dead after a suicide attempt age 21- this social enterprise has gone on to:
✅ Feed 2.5 million people every year
✅ Rescue and redistribute 1,000+ tonnes of food annually
✅ Deliver fresh fruit & veg to 20,000 students every week
✅ Support autistic adults with paid, purposeful work
✅ Send food to refugee camps in Palestine, Ukraine and Calais
✅ Run community fridges serving struggling families across the UK
All powered by one simple idea:
Don’t waste what could nourish someone.
But now, it's all at risk.
Due to two devastating and unexpected bills totalling £300k + & two burglaries in one week, the project has lost its 18,000 sq. ft warehouse and had to make 70% of the team redundant, including staff and volunteers.
Adam and the small team are now overseeing everything, unpaid, from a tiny 500 sq. ft shop - and unless we act fast, the doors will close for good.
We need to raise £20,000 to survive.
That funding will allow us to:
– Reopen a warehouse and rehire staff
– Keep feeding millions of people each year
– Restore fresh fruit & veg for 20,000 students
– Reopen our community fridges
– Continue employing autistic adults who face barriers to work
