The origins of the choir date back to the first months of World War I in 1914 when a concert was organised in support of Belgium's King Albert after his country had been invaded and many of his countrymen had found shelter in the UK, notably in the Wimbledon area. Now more than 110 years in existence, Wimbledon Choral has grown considerably to be one of the most highly rated large symphonic choruses in London and the south-east.
Members are drawn from all walks of life and cover a wide age range. We perform in venues such as London's Cadogan Hall, Holy Trinity Church (Sloane Square), Southwark Cathedral and, if budgets should allow, such eminent locations like the Royal Festival Hall.
Wimbledon Choral not only loves to explore the vast repertoire of existing choral music but also is a champion of commissioning new contemporary works to add to that collection. Following our highly successful commission of Cecilia McDowall's 'Da Vinci Requiem' in 2019 and making its subsequent recording, we have embarked on a second major commission with Tarik O'Regan and his 'Critical Mass', receiving its world premiere in April 2026. The plan is to record that as well and then to think how else we can introduce new choral works to other choirs like ours.
