Namaste!
Voices of Resilience is a collaboration between Rainbow Disability Nepal and DDP in the UK.
Life can be very tough for people with disabilities in Nepal, and also for people who are minoritized on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity.
There is a lot of stigma, misunderstanding and prejudice, and those who belong to both groups – queer disabled people – face multiple forms of discrimination, especially when you factor in poverty, caste and geographical isolation.
Many people experience exclusion from society, barriers to healthcare and opportunities, exploitation, even violence and abuse.
The Response
But Rainbow Disability Nepal wants to make a change, by telling the world that queer disabled people exist, sharing their stories, proudly showing their colours, and raising voices of resilience.
With the help of a well-known ally in Nepal, the solidarity of people in other parts of the world, and social media, Rainbow Disability Nepal will record and share 20 short documentary interviews with queer disabled people in different parts of Nepal.
Publishing these stories will be a big first step in raising awareness of their challenges, networking with isolated people, providing evidence for the changes that are needed, educating the public, encouraging empathy and sparking action for equality and accessibility for all.
