Aim

Help us to develop our HUB to improve the lives of children with Sensory Processing Differences (Autism, ADHD, AuDHD) across rural Devon

Aim

Help us develop The Fidget Project Support Hub – a new way to bring welcoming accompaniment,  specialist support, practical resources, and community to children with Sensory Processing Differences (SPD), their families in their rural South Devon communities

The Challenge

Here, at The Fidget Project, we see on a daily basis the committed efforts of parents who are trying to support their children with SPD to get the opportunities and education they deserve.

Every time we have an Open Peer and Allies Support Group we are amazed at the range of issues these warrior parents are managing: eating disorders, sleep disruption, anxiety that leads to social isolation or self-harm. Every day we see  crying or highly distressed children refusing to go into school, or children who mask all day and then collapse or explode at the end of the school day.

We, The Fidget Project CIC, are a small community of parents and professionals who are determined to do something practical to make things better.

What we do:

  • Host facilitated open support sessions for Parents and Allies , with refreshments and resources
  • Raise awareness of sensory processing differences and how they affect children’s behaviour, self-regulation, relationships and learning
  • Explain how SPD relate to neurodivergence ( Autism ASD; Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder ADHD; AuDHD – dual diagnosis)
  • Run specialist-led sessions on topics that affect our children  ( PDA; ARFID; Interoception) in-person and online
  •  Provide donation-based access to sensory-trained therapists who can create sensory profiles of the child and make practical suggestions
  • Help with complicated form-filling – like applications for diagnosis, or disability benefits or Education Health Care Plans.
  • Run a Lending Library of Sensory Tools and specialist equipment so that parents can ‘try before they buy’- and share their experience to help others
  •  Offer training in schools and to business and communities
  • Work with local services to provide access e.g. to dental care / Oral hygiene sessions to children who do not have ( or cannot go to) an NHS dentist.

Many children diagnosed with Autism, ADHD, AuDHD, dyslexia or dyspraxia experience sensory processing differences that affect how they interact with the world. Children born prematurely or with a medical condition also have SPD.

These differences can affect:

  • self-regulation
  • learning and concentration
  • behaviour and communication
  • emotional wellbeing

For families, the journey to understanding and support can be long and exhausting. In rural communities especially, specialist support can feel almost impossible to reach.

Across the UK, special educational needs provision is under immense pressure. 3+ years on waiting lists for diagnosis; months waiting for an EHCP (Education Health Care Plan.

We offer support NOW: pre, during and post diagnosis.

About The Fidget Project

The Fidget Project is a Community Interest Company (not-for-profit) founded by professionals and parents of neurodiverse children with decades of experience working with children and families.

Our goal is simple:

Help children with sensory processing differences thrive, not just cope.

We want to support our children so they can show their strengths:

  • incredible memory
  • deep focus
  • creative problem solving
  • authentic communication
  • unique perspectives on the world

With the right support, these strengths can flourish.

Our New Direction: a more accessible Hub, in person and online

We provide:

  • practical resources and guidance for parents and carers
  • local in-person support sessions
  • specialist interventions for children who need targeted help
  • signposting to trusted therapists and services
  • community events and workshops
  • specialist training and webinars for parents, professionals & schools
