THE ALKHAM VALLEY COMMUNITY PROJECT AND THERAPEUTIC RIDING CENTRE
Our Community Riding Stables urgently needs to upgrade the surface material in our indoor riding arena. The continuation of therapeutic and educational activities are put at risk until we can reach our goal of £15,322. We are delighted to have already secured match funding from the Sport England Movement Fund of £7661, BUT this is conditional upon us raising the remainder. Our current surface is now worn out, dusty and too thin to absorb the impact of moving horses or indeed to protect a rider in case of a fall. Help us to protect our horses from lameness and to continue to provide our much needed services to the community. We are a community riding stables and registered charity, providing equine-based activity for members of the community who might otherwise struggle to access the benefits of time spent with horses. We have a particular focus on providing sessions for children and young people living with disability and/or deprivation.

The AVCP originally gained charitable status in 2008, re-registering as a CIO in 2013. Since 2008 much of the charity’s work has involved the provision of activities for disadvantaged children and young people, through regular sessions for specialist and mainstream schools, and through referrals from Early Help, social workers and special educational needs and family liaison officers from schools in the area. The AVCP is also a member group of the Riding for Disabled Association, our gentle horses and dedicated volunteers help riders take part in riding and horse care sessions, achieve attainment awards and enjoy competitive challenges at both a regional and national levels.
Alongside this work, the charity has also delivered a 6-year project funded by BBC Children in Need, the ‘Holiday Activities and Food’ Programme (HAF) for children and young people in receipt of benefits related free school meals, and a Reconnect Programme which was part of the government’s drive to get young people taking part in outdoor activities after the pandemic.
Open 4 days a week for 50 weeks of the year, the AVCP aims to make equestrian sport and activity accessible to all of the local community, particularly those who might otherwise be unable to access the benefits of riding and spending time with horses. This aim may be achieved through seeking external funding support for projects that target deprivation and disadvantage and capital funding to provide equipment and facility improvements to ensure activities are fully disabled accessible.
