Sustainable St Albans

RCN 1173118, St Albans

We are Sustainable St Albans - a local environmental charity. A group of ordinary people trying to make St Albans District a more environmentally sustainable place to live. Together we find positive and creative ways to act locally – across St Albans, Harpenden and villages – to raise awareness and address the challenges of climate change, live more sustainably, and move towards a low-carbon economy.

Sustainable St Albans

Sustainable St Albans is an environmental charity trying to make the city and district of St Albans ("the District") a more environmentally sustainable place, in response to the climate and ecological crises that we face. These problems require urgent action at all levels: internationally, nationally, locally, and individually. Sustainable St Albans raises awareness across the District in order to stimulate positive behaviour change, informs and educates organisations and residents about the climate action they can take, and runs practical carbon-cutting projects to demonstrate that it can be done.

How we work

We are a community-led charity, run by volunteers. Our community has built our ideas and provides our direction. Our values are inclusive and collective, relying on the ideas and energy of hundreds of individuals and groups in the District who want it to be more sustainable.

Our big project this year

One of our major projects each year is our Sustainability Festival, and we're currently raised funds through Crowdfunder for SustFest 22, which will run at the end of May.

Your gifts, large or small, will go towards creating banners and signs about SustFest throughout the District, and paying for talented individuals to put in the time needed to create successful social media campaigns to reach out to a range of groups and interests across St Albans, Harpenden and the villages. Funds will also be used to run market stalls and events to help community groups come together with event ideas, collect information on which events have been successful and how we can become even more sustainable going forward.

What else we do

We also run Playing Out, enabling residents to close their streets for several hours each month for children to play together, and grown-ups to spend time together and build community. During the winter months, we loan out our Thermal Imaging Cameras to help you identify heat loss from properties. We are behind the Sustainability Markets in Harpenden and helped set them up in St Albans. We also help residents to reuse broken items rather than throw them away, with St Albans Fixers. Every other month, we put on events called Our Planet Our Future with guest speakers and an opportunity to discuss the topics in groups.

Please donate to SSA

Supporting Sustainable St Albans with a small or large donation helps us to run our programmes, which in turn have a significant impact on the district's carbon footprint.
