Join the campaign to have workplace bullying recognised in UK law.

I'm Nicki Eyre, and during my career, I experienced workplace bullying while in a senior role.  When I spoke up, I found myself out of a job and with severe damage to my health.  It took me about 6 years to fully recover.

Part of my recovery was understanding why my health suffered so badly and learning about workplace bullying trauma.  It was about exploring the weaknesses in the processes and legislation that I thought were there to protect me, but actually just added to the stress and left me feeling helpless and worthless to the point of suicidal ideation.

1746195156_houses_of_parliament.pngOn discovering that other countries had legislation against workplace bullying but the UK didn't, I decided that it was time for change, and set about making that happen.  Little did I know how long that process would be when I started!

For the past 7 years,  I have found some amazing people to help me on this journey, all giving their time voluntarily.  I have also self-funded all of the awareness raising and given significant amounts of time to this cause.

In order to continue, I now need your help to fund further campaigning and awareness raising.  To help you understand what we've achieved so far, here's some background about the Stop Hurt at Work campaign campaign.

The 1746194198_campaign_logo_-_stop_hurt_at_work.pngStop Hurt at Work campaign is calling for an end to workplace bullying – a serious and widespread problem that injures individuals and damages organisations.

The law does not provide sufficient protection or redress for people whose employers let bullying go unchecked, making the process of seeking legal remedy in these cases unduly complex and arduous. We are working with lawyers and legislators to identify and close the gaps in legislation.

Our proposal aims to fill the gap in the law such that non-discriminatory bullying claims achieve equity with harassment claims in a tribunal through:

  • Defining Workplace bullying in legislation
  • Protection for workers from day one
  • The ability to bring a claim without having to resign
  • The potential to claim for injury to feeling

We secured support from Rachael Maskell MP to bring forward a Bill to change the law on workplace bullying.  Our proposal was extended further to create the Bullying and Respect at Work Bill:

"A Bill to provide for a statutory definition of bullying at work; to make provision relating to bullying at work, including to enable claims relating to workplace bullying to be considered by an employment tribunal; to provide for a Respect at Work Code to set minimum standards for positive and respectful work environments; to give powers to the Equalities and Human Rights Commission to investigate workplaces and organisations where there is evidence of a culture of, or multiple incidents of, bullying and to take enforcement action; and for connected purposes.”

On 11 July 2023, Rachael presented her Ten Minute Rule Motion in the House of Commons on Bullying and Respect at Work.

The Bullying and Respect at Work Bill was presented in the new session of Parliament on 11 December 2023, with a second reading scheduled for 7 June 2024.  This was then delayed by the General Election but has been taken forward again in the new session of Parliament following Rachael's successful re-election.

On Monday 21 October 2024, the First Reading of the Bullying and Respect at Work Bill (3807) took place in the House of Commons as a Presentation Bill by Rachael Maskell MP.  The Second Reading is scheduled for 20 June 2025.

To date, everything has been funded by myself with the pro bono support of experts and those with lived experience.  After 7 years, I am now asking for your help.  Campaigning at this level needs investment of both time and money.  If this is a cause that is important to you, then please consider donating.  Your support would help fund:

  • Secretariat support for the campaign
  • Travel to campaign events
  • Website design, hosting and updates
  • Making resources freely available via the website
  • Continuing to provide the Moving On from Workplace Bullying programme on a Pay as You are Able basis

I know that there are so many people who have been affected by workplace bullying.  I know that some of you may not have been able to work again and can't support financially, so please visit our website and download a template letter to send to your MP instead.  You can also help us collect data by sharing your story anonymously via the Speak Out Revolution dashboard.

You can also follow progress on LinkedIn on the Stop Hurt at Work page.

If you can afford to donate, then I thank you from the bottom of my heart.
