Supporting homegrown swim talent in our steel town by raising money for an accessible changing room at Stocksbridge Community Leisure Centre
In November, I swam 7km – the distance between Penistone and Stocksbridge – to raise £7k towards adapting a changing room at the leisure centre into a fully accessible changing room. Thanks to the hugely generous donations of 230 people, we’ve already raised over £8,000—that’s over 20% of the total funds needed towards our goal.
Now, it’s your chance to do your bit to help raise even more money towards support for Stocksbridge Community Leisure Centre to achieve this vital accessible facility.
I’m encouraging you to do your own sponsored swim of 2026 meters—that’s 1¼ miles—to further support the fundraiser and make the accessible changing room a reality.
The distance can be done in one go or over the course of a few weeks.
Whether you’re young or old, novice or professional, disabled or non-disabled, I want everyone to be able to use the swimming pool at the Leisure Centre and find passion in sport, allowing everyone to fulfil their potential.
Spread the word with your friends, family and our local community to sponsor your swim and show them how important swimming as a sport is to you and our wider Stocksbridge community.
All the money will be added to one big pot for the Leisure Centre to fund converting an existing space at the leisure centre into a modern, fully accessible changing room near the poolside.
To get started with your own sponsored swim, scroll down to the bottom of the page and click the blue ‘Fundraise for this cause’ button.
After you have set this up, share the link with your family and friends!
Prefer pen and paper? Please visit the Reception at Stocksbridge Leisure Centre and ask for a paper sponsorship form.
My ‘7km for £7k’ sponsored swim is part of ‘AccessAble’ – a series of sponsored swims that I’ll be doing over the next few years to increase the accessibility of various community organisations across our constituency. I’m always on the lookout for ways to support local organisations to become more accessible, so do get in touch with me at [email protected] if you work with a community-run organisation that I could work with.
