What’s it all about?

The tale of Slovaks and Czechs is a tale of migration. 🇸🇰🇨🇿
For generations, ambitious and resilient people have crossed borders to build new lives in the United Kingdom. 🇬🇧
Some stumbled, others thrived - yet their stories often go untold.

We, Slovak Theatre London, are here to change that. 💪
Our project celebrates the creativity, courage, and identity of Slovak and Czech people living in the United Kingdom. Following the success of our first exhibition in London (September 2025), which welcomed over 500 visitors, we are preparing the next chapter: a new exhibition, a brand-new theatre production, and community workshops. Together, they explore migration, identity, and belonging through real stories and artistic expression.

This project also continues to grow through our documentary film, which follows Slovak and Czech individuals and communities across the UK, preserving their stories for future generations.

What’s happening in January 2026?

🖼 Exhibition: Portraits of Slovak and Czech Britain – Continues

  • VIP Opening: 20 January 2026 at Peggy Jay Gallery at Burgh House, London
  • Public Exhibition: 21–25 January 2026
  • Community Workshops: Five interactive workshops exploring photography, storytelling, and identity

The exhibition, created in collaboration with acclaimed photographer Robert Viglasky (Peaky Blinders, Masters of the Air), features new portraits and stories gathered through community engagement. Each workshop will invite participants to reflect on heritage, migration, and belonging through creative practice.

🎭 Theatre Show: The Streets of London Are Paved with Gold

  • Premiere: 31 January 2026 at King Alfred Phoenix Theatre, London
  • 2nd Performance: 1st February 2026

Our new theatre show, inspired by Zuzana Slobodová’s book, brings migration stories to the stage in an emotional and poetic form. The production is directed by Zuzana Strnátová and features a talented ensemble of five actresses, who will create the piece through a week-long intensive rehearsal lab before premiering it immediately at King Alfred Phoenix Theatre.

The performance blends movement, text, and personal testimony, reimagining the lives of Slovak and Czech migrants in the UK from the 1920s to the present day. It’s an honest, raw, and deeply human story about home, resilience, and belonging.

Who are we?

We’re Slovak Theatre London, a devised theatre collective of Slovak and Czech artists living in the UK.
Founded in 2009, we’ve created 12 original productions, performed in 6 countries, and even reached audiences at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.

Our creative team is led by Dr Simona Vrabcová, artistic director, cultural producer, and researcher, and Rebeka Jurčacková, multidisciplinary artist and visual designer. Together with Robert Viglasky, we’ve built Portraits of Slovak and Czech Britain as a multidisciplinary project linking visual art, live performance, and community storytelling.

How will we use your support?

Delivering the January 2026 exhibition and theatre show costs around £8,000.

Your donations will help cover essential expenses, including rehearsal and production needs, exhibition printing and installation, and venue hire.

Your support will go mainly towards the hire fees: £2,400 for the theatre, £1,000 for the gallery, and £440 for technical support.

Rewards and Early-Bird Tickets 🎟

And because we want you to be part of the experience, we’ve created exclusive rewards, including early-bird tickets for the VIP private opening, exhibition, and theatre premiere. You can even select a bundle for two or explore other creative perks from our reward list.

Every contribution helps us bring these stories to life, ensuring Slovak and Czech voices continue to be heard and celebrated across the UK while supporting independent art. Choose your reward tier, join our community, and become part of this unique creative journey.

Why does it matter?

Independent art and community theatre thrive on collective support. By contributing, you’re helping us celebrate real stories of migration and belonging, stories that deserve to be seen, heard, and remembered. You help us to create LEGACY for future generations.
