Steve's big African adventure
Hello supporters
The Malawi cycle challenge is complete. We covered the grand tour and survived the heat, the hills, the crazy truck drivers and the dodgy tummies. It is a beautiful country with beautiful people, all waving us on and shouting to the crazy Mzungu (whiteys) as we passed by. Between Gill and I and with your contributions, we raised over £3,500 which goes a long way in such a poor country.
We were able to spend a few days in the villages that the charity supports, seeing new water bore holes, permaculture gardens full of produce, new pre-schools , maternity wards , and the benefits to the young adults who had received skills training or university sponsorship and were now able to support their families and relations. Gill organised and led some training in weaving for a group of single mothers whilst I applied my top financial skills by painting classrooms (adding numbers to the frieze)
We did come across lots of hippos , fish eagles and other animals when we visited the national park and Lake Malawi on rest days and there were some beautiful sunrises and sunsets which made a fitting end to our adventure.
Thank you again
Steve
We are cycling across Malawi meeting communities and trying to stay ahead of the hippos. Plus a few days work at Sam's village. We are paying separately for the trip so all the money goes to the charity.
African Village Malawi:
We work in an area 30km away from the capital city, Lilongwe. The area we cover is 400km2 with a local population of 45,000. We support 26 Primary Schools, have just under 3,000 orphans and 300 disabled registered with 2 clinics and 2 maternity units. We work through 14 centres where we have a Local Based Committee (LBC) of 7 volunteers in each centre who help us see and resolve the issues.
