Sofa To Sailboat needs a little extra help to get Poppet to the launch ramp. So far, the project has been assisted by corporate sponsors, private supporters, and the skipper's investment, but COVID and changing political situations have left the treasure chest a little short.
Sofa To Sailboat will pass on 20% of all sponsorships raised here to our charities via our CollectionPot. Any excess donations past our fundraising goal will be split evenly between the charities named below.
ABOUT
In December 2022, 'Poppet' and her skipper JK D Habbershaw Jnr. will undertake an independent and unassisted 3000-mile voyage across the Atlantic Ocean in a tiny 17 ft' dinghy with a lid' to raise £100,000 in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support, Mind, MS-UK and St Helena Hospice.
This page has been set up expressly to help raise funds for the essential safety equipment, training, and logistics costs, but Sofa To Sailboat will still pass on 20% of whatever we achieve here to our favourite charities.
THE ADVENTURE
> The 3000-mile crossing will be east to west from the Canary Islands to Antigua.
> The boat will average 3.5 knots per hour (4mph), a fast walking pace.
> The trip across the Atlantic will take about 30-35 days.
> The largest waves can measure up to 20ft-40ft high.
> There is no space for a toilet on board – there is a bucket with a padded lid.
THE BOAT
> 'Poppet' is an early MK1 'Leisure 17' made from fibreglass by Cobramould in Essex. The boat is around 50 years old. 'Poppet' measures just 17ft (5.2m) long – that's smaller than a Ford Transit van.
> The boat fully provisioned will weigh about 850kg. That's similar to half the weight of a large family-sized car!
