Aim
SPFA aims to upgrade our much- loved village park with inclusive new equipment, including a basket swing for all children to enjoy
Our History:
In 1987 Sling Playing Fields Association or SPFA as it is affectionately known, was formed by a group of mums and dads in the Forest of Dean recognising the need for a play area for the children in the village of Sling. Everyone in the village soon got behind the idea and very quickly with the support of the Forestry Commission, The Parish Council, grants, and fund raising by the committee funds were raised and equipment was purchased.
So successful was the project that in 1989 the playing field won the prestigious first prize in the Village Ventures Competition for Gloucestershire beating stiff competition.
Our work and ethos:
Over the years, the playing field has been maintained by the committee with new equipment added when possible thanks to continued fundraising efforts. The committee regularly fund raise to cover the maintenance, insurance and playground inspections by ROSPA.
We're so proud that many of the original committee still serve with their children, grandchildren, nephews, nieces, friends and new arrivals to the village now taking over the baton. This really is a whole- community mindset. All are welcome and supported to enjoy, respect and care for the space.
Heading towards 40 years, the playing field is an integral fixture in the village and plays a huge part in village life providing vital play space as well as a picnic area for families.
Our plans and how you can help:
Our commitment to upgrade and improve the playing field remains strong. Last year the committee successfully installed a MUGA (multi use games area) providing a universal year-round facility for all our youngsters in the village & surrounding area- kids love it!
As times change, so must the play park equipment. The (much-loved) tyre swing was recently removed as part of the development of the new MUGA and, following updated safety guidance, the decision was made to remove it. As a committee, the safety and wellbeing of children and families using the playing field will always remain our top priority.
We are therefore aiming to replace it with a modern, fully compliant basket swing that provides a safer, more inclusive play experience for children of all ages and abilities.
