Hadles and I are swimming 3km from Albania to Corfu to help protect the Ionian Sea’s last dolphins, monk seals and their habitats.
In just over a week, We will be grabbing my passport, budgie smugglers and goggles. Hadles and I are swimming from Albania to Greece. Three kilometres across the Ionian Sea, finishing in Corfu.
We signed up because we love ocean swimming. Then we learned what the swim is really all about.
And it got us, more than we expected it to. My dad's family are from the Ionian Islands,Ithaca & Kythira. These are my family's waters.
Thirty years ago, around 150 common dolphins lived in the Inner Ionian Sea. These waters are overfished. When the fish went, so did the dolphins. Their numbers fell by 90 percent. Today, about two dozen are left.
So many people visit these waters every year, to swim, to sail, to holiday. Not many of us stop to think what it actually cost.
What started as an adventure for both of us now feels like a responsibility.
We're swimming for the Ionian Environment Foundation, protecting dolphins, monk seals, and the habitats they need to survive.
Two dozen dolphins. That's how close we are to losing them here.
But that can change. Awareness changes what people do. Money changes what gets done. Every share counts. Every donation any size counts.
Thanks so much.
