“What I discovered here was a quality of information and support and community that was unlike anything else.”
The Pregnancy and Parents Centre (PPC) is at risk. But together we can save it.
The PPC is a charity that supports families through their pregnancy and early parenthood journeys. It has been a crucial resource to parents in Edinburgh and the Lothians for 40 years.
“I couldn’t have imagined how valuable the PPC would be... It has helped me feel educated, informed, empowered, confident and supported for birth and early parenthood.”
Since the pandemic, our running costs have risen sharply while funding has stagnated. Without immediate support, the PPC will be forced to shut its doors within months.
This would mean the loss of a vital lifeline for families across Edinburgh, at a time when support is needed more than ever.
We cannot let that happen.
“I heard about the Centre thanks to the recommendation of my NHS health visitor. As a first time mum without any family near, the Centre has been a lifeline for me and my son.”
Starting a family in today’s Edinburgh is harder than it should be. More and more parents are facing pregnancy and early parenthood with little or no support.
Public services have been cut or scaled back. Support from family and community is no longer a given. Isolation, loneliness, and postnatal depression are becoming common experiences, not exceptions.
“Attending [the PPC] has been really important in improving my mental health since having a baby. I enjoy the opportunity to meet and share with other mums who are experiencing similar things to me. It makes me feel included and normal again.”
The Centre makes a real and lasting difference to new families by meeting their need for connection, community, and practical knowledge. At a time that can feel vulnerable, challenging and often overwhelming, it offers a welcoming space where parents-to-be and new parents can share experiences, find reliable information, and build the friendships that carry them through the highs and lows of early parenthood.
“The Centre supported me through becoming a dad twice. It's an instantly welcoming place that gave me confidence, connection, and the tools to be a better parent and partner. If we lose that, Edinburgh will be forever poorer for it, and parenting even harder.”
During pregnancy, we offer yoga for pregnancy classes, as well as workshops for birth preparation, Dads-to-be, and preparation for breastfeeding.
“I didn’t know what to expect, probably a classic yoga course to keep me active during pregnancy. Instead, I found so much more: a safe place and a support group.”
“All classes have been incredibly helpful and empowering…[A]nd knowing this community is here after birth too is a massive reassurance and lifts the concern of feeling lonely in this new life chapter.”
For the postnatal period, we offer support for mothers with young babies in the form of free, weekly drop-in groups (Motherspace, Motherwalk, and breastfeeding support), as well as baby massage and postnatal yoga for parents with their babies.
“I can’t begin to express how much attending PPC has helped my transition to motherhood.”
“I love the breastfeeding group because I had issues with feeding my baby. I found it really helpful.”
“There is something really important about what happens [at Motherwalk], where we're connecting and talking about the struggles but also helping each other out with tips and support. I think without that motherhood becomes quite lonely.”
For families with young children, we offer music classes for babies, toddlers, and pre-school children (Music with Jackie), storytelling sessions, baby and child first aid courses, and support for international families new to Edinburgh.
“PPC has been life changing for us both during and after pregnancy. The yoga and massage courses are great, Motherwalk is life giving and Music with Jackie is an institution for good reason. The staff are amazing and we’ve met loads of friends here. A welcoming and warm place that's really unique.”
Our Nearly New Sales enable families to get the maternity wear, baby clothes, equipment and toys that they need on a pay-what-you-can basis, greatly reducing their anxiety around meeting their baby’s and growing child’s needs.
Everyone deserves emotional and practical support during pregnancy and new parenthood. No one should have to face it alone, especially in a city as affluent as Edinburgh. That’s why it matters so much to us that no parent is ever turned away from the Centre because of money. We’re committed to running on a donation system, with sliding scales for our classes and workshops, so that support is always within reach.
“We didn't have loads of money to be buying all these new clothes. So having that opportunity to pay as much as we could was very cool.”
But the current economic climate is hitting everyone. Families coming to the Centre are less able to donate because of the cost of living crisis. At the same time, our running costs have risen, and the funding available to charities is in decline. It’s becoming harder and harder to sustain the services we provide that many families rely on.
“If the Centre didn't exist, it would be absolutely heartbreaking because there's nothing like it in Edinburgh. It's really special. It's not just about the classes. It really is about the whole community, about sharing the experience.”
We need your support, and the strength of our wider, shared, community, to keep this work going. If you can help save the PPC, please donate through this page. Share it with friends and family, and add a note about what the Centre has meant to you. Every donation goes directly towards keeping the Centre open and making sure no parent has to go it alone in Edinburgh.
We’re grateful for anything you can give.
