Plympton Community Tennis Courts
These park courts in the centre of Plympton were originally maintained and repaired by Plymouth City Council. In recent years Plympton Tennis Club has taken increasing responsibility for cleaning and maintenance of the courts. In 2015, we raised money and organised grants to pay for two courts to be resurfaced.
What's The Problem ?
Unfortunately the other two courts failed a risk assessment in September 2021 and have been closed. It has been 20 years since the last major work was done but they now need resurfacing before play can be allowed again.
Effect of Covid-19
Covid meant the club lost money from public use. When the courts were re-opened after the lockdowns they were very busy with their usage tripling. It was apparent how much the community really valued this facility and its positive effect on their wellbeing. Outdoor tennis is Covid-safe and if we do not re-surface them the courts will remain closed and opportunities for local people to play tennis will literally be cut by half.
Ease of Use
The courts are open to anyone, can be easily booked online and the electronic gates allow everyone to access courts with ease.
The tennis courts are part of a local sports hub which includes cricket and bowls. It is part of the fabric of Harewood Park.
Community Involvement
We are committed to involving the local community in playing tennis and are always on the lookout for new opportunities to welcome people at every level to the sport. During the pandemic we kept the courts open, when allowed, and saw a huge upswing in use, as people realised the benefit of a socially-distanced sport for health and well-being.
Our recent community activities have included:
- A local Health and Well-Being group have joined with a regular coaching group.
- Fit & Fed - for local school children who are eligible for free school meals
- National Play Day – a celebration of children’s right to play
- We also provide regular sessions for wheelchair players.
This type of outreach meant that we received Devon County's Tennis Community Award in 2019.
Club Opportunities
The courts are open to all with some club sessions open to non-members. People are also encouraged to join the club, to extend their playing activity to; league matches, social competitions, club sessions and coaching. We are a welcoming, friendly and inclusive club and invite everyone to our courts. Plympton Tennis Club was amongst the 1st clubs in Devon to comply with the LTAs safeguarding standards and passed it's recent review with flying colours.
Family Fun Afternoon - Open to Non-members.
What This Project Means to Us!
The resurfacing work will give the Plympton courts a new lease of life and guarantee the club’s continued stewardship of the courts for the Plympton Community. For example, we have plans to offer free tennis to people recommended by the social prescriber to benefit their health and well-being. It is essential that the club is successful, as they are the driving force in enabling access to the courts by the community. Without your support the courts will fall out of use, as they will become unsafe. This will mean a loss of an important asset to the people of Plympton and be detrimental to the environment of Harewood Park.
