Aim: Raising money in memory of Sam' Grandparents who suffered with dementia, and to support the ongoing research into prevention and treatment.
Sam is taking part in the cycle and Kieran will be one of 4 support team on the day, feeding the troops and being a morale boost throughout the day, on hand for any emergencies or bike issues!
Sam's story is below:
"I am raising money for Alzheimers Society in memory of my grandparents, Lily and Ron Twomey.
This is the third Aviva “Tour De Mentia”, and this year we will be cycling 330km from coast to coast in just one day. Once completed, we will have cycled over 1000km in our three tours and aim to have raised more than £100k with your generous support.
My grandfather, Ron, was an incredibly active man, boxing and playing football in the Army and then taking up golf in his later years. He was a talented engineer and loved making toys and tools for his grandchildren, such as a wooden ride-on train for my brother and I, which my toddler still rides on. Ron’s handmade tools now take pride of place now in my collection.
My grandmother, Lily, was a caring and loving lady who was ever-present in my life growing up, making the best cheese toasties, managing to mend my torn school trousers and always there to play rummy and watch Countdown on sick days from school.
Dementia took such a dreadful toll on both my grandparents in their final years, and it really impacted my family. Lily managed to meet my children in brief moments of lucidity, but as anyone who has watched a loved one suffer with dementia will know, the disease robs people of their memories and dignity.
I therefore want to do all I can do to support the research and development of treatments against Alzheimer's so my children and so many others don't have to see their heroes affected by this awful disease."
It would mean so much to Sam and Kieran for any support you can give!
