Win an exclusive journey on board an RNLI lifeboat - A once-in-a-lifetime opportunity
One lucky winner, along with their friend or family member (both must be at least 18 years old), will win the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to join the RNLI’s lifesavers on board a Shannon class lifeboat on a journey from Liverpool to Manchester on 9 October 2024.
Joining the crew at Liverpool Marina, the winner and their guest will travel along the River Mersey and Manchester Ship Canal for approximately 4 hours, before arriving in Salford Quays.
You’ll enjoy an exclusive behind-the-scenes tour of our state-of-the-art lifeboat and spend time with lifeboat crew to hear their stories and experience of saving lives at sea.
The Cause - Help us Save Lives
The funds you can help us raise through this prize draw will support our RNLI lifesaving around the coast of the UK, Ireland, IOM and Channel Islands. 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year our volunteers are ready to save lives, just as we have done for 200 years. Our lifeboat crews and lifeguards have saved over 146,000 lives since 1824.
But this is only possible with the generous support of people like you. As a charity, we rely on the kindness of the public to power our lifesaving. Your support could replenish essential kit. It could help to hone vital skills such as casualty care. It could help fuel the lifeboat that powers them to the rescue. Whatever the need, your support will make you a lifesaver.
We have set a target of £20,240 to mark the RNLI’s 200 year of lifesaving in 2024, which is less than 10% of the cost of the Shannon class lifeboat.
About the Coast to Cobbles Journey
2024 marks the RNLI’s 200th anniversary year and to mark this momentous occasion, from 28 September to 10 October 2024, a Shannon-class lifeboat and its crew will travel by sea, river and canal – from Silloth in Cumbria to Salford Quays in Greater Manchester – on a lifesaving mission of a different kind.
It is inspired by one of the most courageous acts in RNLI history, which prompted one of the kindest. On 10 December 1886, 27 lifeboatmen from Southport and St Annes lost their lives off the Lancashire coast while trying to rescue sailors from the stricken vessel Mexico.
The tragedy, which remains the largest loss of life in the RNLI’s 200-year history, rallied an impassioned nation together. A public appeal was launched to help the families left behind, which included 16 widows and 50 fatherless children. And in aid of the appeal, a small group of fundraisers organised the world’s first recorded street collection.
The street collection, which took place in Manchester on 10 October 1891 involving an RNLI lifeboat being paraded through the city’s streets, was so successful, it became the first of many Lifeboat Saturdays that would go on to raise vital funds for the charity and the families that save lives at sea.
