The Grade II listed Norman building in Shoreham-by-Sea is famous for its striking flint and limestone chequerboard façade and is understood to have been used as a toll or custom house for the port and markets, providing secure storage for high-end goods such as wines, spices and fabrics.
Now it is home to the Marlipins Museum and a unique collection which sheds light on the area’s rich maritime and local history.
With challenging economic conditions being felt right across the heritage sector, our role as a guardian of Sussex’s heritage is becoming increasingly difficult. You can help us undertake important conservation work, enhancing the experience for all who visit and safeguarding these wonderful properties for future generations to enjoy.
We urgently need to commission a specialist conservation survey on historic timber at Marlipins Museum. This will inform a programme of remedial conservation and will increase our understanding of the historic building.
We specifically need your help in order to carry out this survey. The Friends of Marlipins Museum have generously pledged £500 towards the survey, but we need your support to raise more and ensure it can be completed.
The Chair of the Friends of Marlipins Museum adds:
“The fascinating building that is Marlipins Museum dates from the 12th Century and is one of the country’s oldest secular buildings. Next year will mark the 100th anniversary of Marlipins being saved by public subscription for the benefit of all.
Contributions to this fundraising campaign will support us in our continuing work to ensure the preservation of Marlipins Museum, for all our communities to enjoy now and in the future.”
Please consider donating, as every contribution, no matter the amount, helps us reach our goal.
