Who are we?
Camelford Leisure Centre
Camelford Leisure Centre has been managed by a Community Benefit Society since Cornwall Council decided in 2012 that they could no longer afford to subsidise its running at a cost of £180,000 per year. With the support of the local community and our amazing staff, we have managed to run the centre on a financially sustainable basis over the past 12 years but we are now faced with some large maintenance costs which we will be unable to cover completely from our own income. These essential replacements will ensure we can continue to provide health and leisure activities for the community and expand our services to meet the increasing need.
Beyond sport and leisure activities, to help combat the cost-of-living crisis, we also offer the centre as a free 'warm space', as well as working with the NHS to run pain clinics and diabetes support sessions and Active Cornwall to promote the benefits of exercise.
The board of directors are very keen to maintain the high standards at the Centre so that we can continue to provide the best possible experience for our users.
In addition to this Sport England funding, we have also been awarded National Lottery Awards For All funding to pay 50% of the nearly £40,000 cost of replacing the pool cover, recovering the low roofs around the sports hall that are already leaking and work on the sewage pumps. All these are essential to the future of the Centre
Why are we crowdfunding?
Sport England have awarded us a grant of £7,500 on condition that we match it with £7,500 raised on Crowdfunder towards the nearly £18,000 cost of the replacement equipment
Whilst we do have a wide range of weight lifting equipment, the cardio machines which include two cross trainers, a rowing machine, two treadmills, two upright exercise bikes and a ski machine are generally more suitable for people who want to begin to use the fitness suite. However, in order to attract them, the equipment has to be in a good state of repair and not look too dilapidated which some of our equipment is starting to do.
How we’ll spend the money raised
2x treadmills £3,955.50 each
2x cross trainer. £2,515.50
1x upright cycle £ 1,795.50
1x Dual adjustable pulley £2,395.00
Total Cost £17,211.00 plus delivery and set up costs
Community impact
The ethos of the centre is to provide exercise opportunities for everyone in the community to help improve their physical and mental health. We specifically want to encourage new users to try out the fitness suite equipment by running regular classes to introduce them to the range of exercise opportunities that are on offer and to support them in their development.
We have recently built a new exercise studio equipped with spin bikes and other equipment for low to moderate intensity exercise. Having good standard cardio equipment will complement this and widen the range of exercise opportunities on offer to attract more people to take up some physical activity,
How you can play your part
