Who are we?

The Hingham Sports Centre is owned by Hingham Playing Field Association  (reg charity no. 286060) run by a committee of volunteers dedicated to ensuring the facilities are sustained, benefiting the future physical and mental health of local residents.

Why are we crowdfunding?

Hingham Sports Centre is crowdfunding to repair the sports hall floor which is cracked and crumbling. Small areas of tiling are taped over to keep them in place and the floor cracks are causing problems with balls bouncing irregularly.

The hall was built in 1989 and has three courts which are marked for badminton and pickleball. It's the hub of local sporting activity, hosting  regular sessions of pickleball, badminton, judo, tabletennis,  archery, over 60s short mat bowls, women's softball and  'move it or lose it' seated exercise classes for those with physical limitations.

It's the home of the Norfolk County Over 60s bowls club and used by a local school for children with special educational needs. The grounds include: football and cricket pitches used by adult and children's teams;  two all-weather flood-lit tennis courts; plus outdoor gym equipment and a children's play-space.

The hall floor is showing its age but, being constructed from Granwood tiles, can be repaired to support sport for many years to come. Ongoing maintenance will not be required for at least 5 years, and every 3 years thereafter. The maintenance is affordable and included in the business plan.

How we’ll spend the money raised

All funds raised will be allocated to repair the Sports Hall Floor to a good standard, using a three stage process:

1. Floor  Repair

*Sand entire sports hall floor to a fine 120-grit finish.

*Carry out all necessary repairs and filling to damaged areas prior to sealing.

2. Court Marking

*Mark out 3 badminton courts including Pickleball lines

*Stain courts in blue

3. Sealing

*Apply 2 coats of Granseal lacquer to the full floor area.

Community impact

Hingham Sports Centre is at the heart of the small rural community of Hingham, offering social activities as well as a range of sports.  There is a family friendly bar and clubhouse which offers darts, pool and cribbage sessions, as well as organising affordable children's events. Free children's activity days are available during the summer holidays.

There is a foodbank based at the Centre opening a fortnightly drop-in for those struggling with the cost of living. The Centre hosts a free annual Christmas party for senior citizens. The hall also hosts events such as craft and collectors fairs.

There is something for everyone at HIngham Sports Centre which attracts users from the town and surrounding villages. The space promotes not just sport but social connection and peer support. Many individuals have been drawn into sporting activity after meeting at the Centre for social activities. Clubs offer a warm welcome to beginners  as well as the more accomplished, generating a great mix accessible for all. The Centre plays a vital role in keeping members of the community physically and mentally healthy, active and engaged through all stages of life.
