Many of you work directly with Eslam and will be familiar with his enthusiasm and commitment to his food waste and recycling activities in North and East London.
His vital work, carried out on behalf of the Sustainable Nutrition Academy, a Community Interest Company (C.I.C.) founded in 2021, prevents tons of valuable resources from ending up in landfill or incinerators; instead transforming it into nutrient-rich compost for local community gardens and other important circular economy initiatives.
So far we’ve:
- Rescued 117 tonnes of organic waste from ending up in either the incinerator or landfill. This in turn means less greenhouse gases polluting our locality.
- Made generous amounts of compost in 30 community gardens and centres with these rescued materials.
- Rescued around 3-4 tonnes of food from Tesco and redistributed it.
Unfortunately, Eslam’s work was unexpectedly disrupted when the frame of the e-bike he uses for collections snapped in half after a careless driver turning a corner pushed it into a pothole last week.
Thankfully, Eslam was not injured, but the damage to the bike is significant and means we are currently struggling to continue our regular collections from businesses. Furthermore, our ability to rescue food from partners like Tesco and deliver it to the food banks we support has also been put on hold until we have a working bike again.
To ensure Eslam can get back on the road and resume his essential service, we’re asking for your help to raise enough money to cover the cost of a new electric cargo bike for the Academy, which has so far been relying on the generosity of St Mary's Church in lending him the original bike.
We’re aiming to raise £5200 for a brand new and fully insured e-cargo bike and would also like to cover the £1200 needed to repair the original bike, so St Mary’s Church can continue to lend it out to local initiatives.
If you could make even just a little donation towards this crowdfunder, it will directly enable Eslam to continue his vital work, diverting waste, enriching our community gardens, and ensuring that surplus food reaches those who need it most.
Thank you in advance for your consideration.
