To create a new Community Hub in the historic building of Swarthmore Hall, on Mutley Plain - connecting the local community to the space
We’re breathing new life into Swarthmore Hall on Mutley Plain - transforming it into a place where community can truly thrive.
We are creating a shared home for Vineyard Church, Devon and Cornwall Refugee Support, Livewell Southwest, Children’s Storehouse and Radical Ecology.
Each partner brings their own strengths, creating a centre that connects the communities of Peverell, Mutley and Mannamead with the beneficiaries of all our services. Together, we are building a place where support, creativity and community can flourish.
And this is just the start. Alongside a vibrant shared working space, the building will become a true community hub: a large hall and kitchen available for lease, the potential for a community café, a new exhibition space, artist studios, a community garden and much more.
Your donations to this Crowdfunder will make the essential remodelling and building work possible, providing furniture for the main hall, completing necessary electrical works and establishing the Wi‑Fi infrastructure. Any surplus will help sustain and further develop the community café and garden, ensuring this space continues to grow long after the doors open.
Our plan of works will unfold in three phases:
Phase 1 -
Bringing the office spaces and entrance hall up to standard, re-painting where necessary, putting down new vinyl /carpet, upgrading electrics and lighting and providing high speed internet across the entire building. Furniture and a curtain will be bought for the hall.

Phase 2 -
Re-open up the stage to its original features, make walls good, fit new ceiling, build new stairs to access the stage and open up the side door for clearer access to the commercial kitchen.
Phase 3 -
Complete works for the community cafe including open up the door to access the kitchen and toilets, bring fresh and waste water into the smaller hall, buy furniture, plants and materials needed to run a cafe.

Phase 4 -
Build walls, ceilings and doors for the artist studios. Paint and complete electrics and lighting.
