Keep hockey in Hailsham, East Sussex. We are looking to raise funds to help resurface the pitch at Hailsham Community College.
On the 18th March 2024 we'd raised £22,091 with 225 supporters in 56 days. But as every pound matters, we're continuing to collect donations from supporters.
If we over reach our target we will be able to fund optional extras for the pitch such as funding bespoke colours so we have contrasting off pitch areas. We also need additional fencing to enable use of the car park behind our goals. Storage facilities for our equipment.
We are a community hockey club catering for all genders aged 6 to 60+. Affiliated to England Hockey we field a junior side, two men's teams and three women's teams. We are a true community and family club with an open door for anyone that wants to play or would like to learn to play.
We play at local secondary school Hailsham Community College. The pitch was laid in 2001 and is well beyond its intended life. The pitch has been patched up and there are holes in some areas. An assessment of the pitch has shown it soon needs to be replaced in order to continue use. Without a hockey suitable surface the hockey club would be unable to continue. We are therefore keen to help the school to resurface the pitch not only for the continuation of the club but for the wider use of the school and community that also use it.
The money will be used to pay towards the cost of resurfacing and upgrading the lights. This will cost around £291k based on quotes following a pitch inspection. Wealden District Council has committed £216k. The school is funding £50k. Our fundraising will help to get the project over the line with the hockey club finding the final £25k.
Our club has a big impact on the participants that take part. Hailsham Hockey Club has over 100 registered members. It really is a community club with an inclusive reach. Ages in our adult section teams range from 15 to 60+. With the club having both men's and women's sections it caters for a real cross section of the community. We have several generations playing sometimes in the same teams with mothers playing with daughters and sons with fathers. We also have a mixed side and we have current members who represent the England masters teams (vets hockey). The club has over 100 years of history and it would be a huge loss to Hailsham should the club no longer have a home in the town. Indeed alternative pitch availability elsewhere locally simply does not exist.
Beyond the hockey club the pitch also hosts a number of other organisations. Last but not least the school community will benefit from the pitch being resurfaced with children having quality and appropriate facilities for both curriculum and extracurricular activity.
There are four simple ways to help us reach our target, and make this project a reality.
1. Make a pledge. Don’t delay if you’re going to support us because momentum is key to our success!
2. Spread the word. Share our project on your social media pages and tell the world to get behind us! The more people we reach, the more support we will get.
3. Offer rewards. Get involved if you are a local business by donating things we can offer to our supporters. We will give you a shout out!
4. Fundraise for us. If you want to run your own fundraiser – maybe a sponsored activity or similar – use the 'contact project' button at the top of our page to let us know. Setting up your own page only takes a few minutes and you won’t need any bank details. Just a fun idea! The club have also organised several sponsored events should you want to join these on our behalf. These include a sponsored walk (Hastings to Eastbourne Pier), Eastbourne Half Marathon, Millers Car Wash and a junior sponsored event taking place during their training sessions.
