Aim

Working to restore the Pencil Park play area and reduce antisocial behaviour in this much-loved green space on Brixton Hill, London SW2.

Pencil Park is a green space on Brixton Hill (between Beechdale Road and Endymion Road). In an area where most people have little or no outdoor space at home, it's really valued as a place to get outside, spending time in nature and meeting neighbours.

We are currently working to improve the space by replacing community-built play equipment that was removed by the council for safety reasons, with a scheme that works for the community and the council.

We also run regular litter-picking and bulb-planting sessions in Rush Common woodland trail, Pencil Park and Roupell Park.

Any donations you can spare will go towards the new play area as well as planting throughout these shared green spaces.

Background

Neighbours have given their own time and money over several years to make Pencil Park a usable community space and reduce antisocial behaviour. They previously built a play area, boules pitch and football goals, as well as chairs and tables, and the park was used by families and individuals for exercise, fun and social gatherings. In 2024, however, the council removed the play equipment due to safety concerns, and the Rush Common Improvement Group was founded in part to replace it.

We are now working to restore the park in a way that meets council requirements and brings our community together through the design, build and eventually use of the play area. The current vision is for a beechwood structure that will be sympathetic to nature, and "pencil" posts to keep the identity of the space consistent with what has been there previously.

To bring these plans forward we will need to raise up to £20,000. We are making grant applications but community donations will really make a difference too, as well as helping to show how valued the space is by local people.

About us
The Rush Common Improvement Group was founded in 2024 to support the green spaces protected by the Rush Common Act. We have a small committee and a wider circle of volunteers who give input on plans and come along to volunteer events throughout the year. You can get in touch with us on our socials or via our website at rushcommon.co.uk
