Nireas Triathlon Club is swimming 648 km to help protect Cyprus’ seas, marine life, and coastline, in support of CEF. WE DID IT 1,296km!
As a triathlon club our members race and train in the seas of our home – the island of Cyprus. The seas are very important to us as they provide not just the venue for the first leg of each race, but also a backdrop for the whole event and a training ground for improving our performance.
The seas around Cyprus are beautiful crystal-clear blue waters with wonderful coastlines and an amazing variety of wildlife. Like many natural environments the marine eco system of Cyprus is under pressure from pollution, invasive species, costal development and tourism. We have set ourselves the challenge of swimming a distance equivalent to circumnavigating the whole island to raise awareness about the work of the Cyprus Environment Foundation and to raise funds to support the excellent work that it does for marine conservation in Cyprus.

Our target was to collectively swim 648 km in the month of July; a distance that represents the coastline of Cyprus. We are now going for two circuits! Every kilometer that we swim represents a kilometer of that precious coastline and every donation helps to ensure the waters, the marine life, and the coastline are protected for the enjoyment all.
We have had such a fantastic response to our challenge that we decided to push for a higher target. Thank you to all who have supported us so far.
UPDATE
After week five we were a few kilometers off a second circuit, so a few members put in some extra swims and WE DID IT - circumnavigated the whole island TWICE!
In our first week we swam180 km. In our second week 261 km. Week three added another 303 km and week four, 308 km. A final push added 244 km in the last days of the challenge to reach 1, 296 km - twice around Cyprus.
