Aim

To replace the flat roof which is over thirty years old to stop water leaking onto the floors of our three squash courts and the corridor.

Who are we ?

Mays Bounty is the historic name given to our sports club, which dates back to May 1865. It was born at a special meeting, held at the Wheatsheaf Inn in Basingstoke, which brought about a new cricket club.

Various members were elected by the mayor of Basingstoke, Cllr Edward White, and one of these was the brewery owner and local benefactor John May, who was made president of the club.

Four years later the cricket ground was handed over to the trustees of “May’s Bounty”, a name by which the ground is still known today.

John May died in 1920, aged 83, having given a great deal of money and support to the club.

Today the club is a thriving multi sport club, with cricket, rugby, football and squash. Basingstoke Sports and Social Club

Three squash courts were added in 1977 and today the club is the premier squash club in Basingstoke. We have over 100 adult members, running multiple adult teams in the Berkshire squash league, a thriving Saturday morning junior section and over 200 primary school children come each week to have squash lessons at the club.

Despite that, many members of the public do not know we have three squash courts hidden behind the main club house !

What we want to achieve

  • We want to raise £30K to replace the flat roof over the courts.
  • The roof has deteriorated over the last 30 years and needs replacing.
  • When it rains, water leaks on the courts and down into the corridor area.

Why are we doing this project ?

1759163766_buckets_on_squash_court_1.jpg

  • Membership of our squash club is growing, both adult and junior membership.
  • As the premier squash club in the area we want to provide premier playing facilities.
  • Over the last two years we have invested in new floors for two of our three courts but the roof has started leaking badly.
  • We urgently need to replace the flat roof to preserve our investment in the squash court floors and make sure they are not damaged.
  • Promoting our fundraising via CrowdFunder will also increase the visibility of squash to the local community and enable us to offer free court use to the local public.
  • Sustaining our squash courts will help inspire, engage and connect people to try the sport and live happier, healthier lives together.

Who will benefit

  • If our floors are damaged we will be unable provide squash and racketball facilities to over 500 people
  • Stopping leaks will benefit over 500 peopele each month
    •  140 adult members
    • 12 ladies who play squash regularly for free.
    • 50 junior members who attend coaching sessions each week.
    • 200 school children who have lessons each week at the club
    • 100 squash and racketball players from across Berkshire and Hampshire who play league matches at the club on a regular basis.
