Hello. Thank you for fluttering in.

What is Moths to a Flame?

It's a collaborative, mass participation art and energy project. We want to take your voice on the climate emergency to World Leaders gathering at COP 26 next year in Glasgow - the international climate conference.

We are gathering together thousands of digital and hand made moths created by the people of Plymouth, and the wider South West, to travel to Glasgow to be displayed at the Botanic Gardens during the conference. The interactive installation will also feature the recordings of voices captured in Plymouth, talking about hopes and ideas for a better future.

What are we trying to do?

We want to raise £25,000 for a year of FREE creative climate action activities for residents and children! Did you know that a collection of moths is called a whisper? We want you to help us create a giant whisper that turns into a roar for change, by offering ways to get involved in a huge issue in a really positive way.

To create, play and collaborate on making a more positive energy future, by learning what is possible and getting hands-on.

What can I look forward to if you succeed?

  • The launch of a Spring / Summer #WatchMoths series to explore our relationship with nature from your living room!
  • Thousands of FREE moth-making packs handed out to help other Plymouth residents join the installation
  • The development of a FREE digital schools pack for every school in the city
  • A series of FREE Community solar art workshops to make 4 working panels to power the installation
  • A special Plymouth preview of the final installation and reception
  • An accessible, virtual alternative for those that can't come along - using artificial reality technology.

Your reward?

Apart from the pure joy of supporting a better energy future, you could:

  • Adopt a solar panel and become part of Plymouth's very own 'Solar System'!
  • Receive an original 'Moth' artwork or painting to adorn your wall
  • Be invited to our exclusive moth trapping night in Ernesettle
  • Snag a limited edition signed copy of Matt Harvey's beautiful 'Moths to a Flame' poem
  • Join us at the Plymouth preview of the art installation
  • Go all in, and come along for the ride to Glasgow!

...and much, much more.

The story so far

We joined the Art and Energy Collective in 2018, and held events at the Fab Lab in Plymouth, the digital innovation and fabrication laboratory. We've been looking at new solar technologies that are colourful and flexible and...well...EXCITING!

Who are the Art and Energy Collective?

1604327387_mothers.jpg

The Art and Energy Collective is a group of makers, artists, engineers, ecologists, academics and energy bods who believe exploring energy and new technologies in a creative way is the best way of improving the system long term.

Why Art and Energy?

We see people's confidence soar when they have the space to explore energy and our relationship with it creatively. We also see some pretty cool ideas developing. We think it's time to take action...and we want you to join in!

1603916848_img_2395.jpg

We learnt how to design with them. How to etch the panels. How to make plans to use them in everyday life. And the subject came alive!

Soon we were making collaborative community solar artworks - things of beauty that can provide clean, renewable power.

So we expanded our horizons

We wanted to help more people in Plymouth explore our relationship with energy, this time using a theme. Along came Moths to a Flame

1603923442_ill_3.jpg1603919375_87455747_1363530243819188_1357432561453760512_o.jpg

We held free workshops in community venues to explore the climate and made glow in the dark moths whose wings carry your thoughts on climate action.

We tested Speakpipe - a portal to capture and share people talking about the climate emergency and what it means to them.

We started to visit schools and make trips to Ernesettle's community solar array to explore renewables and nature in the open.

1603917591_children's_book_-_1.jpg1603919222_illuminate_montage.jpg

We published a children's book, The Moth's Whisper, to explore our relationship with nature and the effect energy has on it. And we held a trial Moths to a Flame art installation at Illuminate 2019.

...then the world changed. And so did we.

We've been trialling #WatchMoths a series of live, online moth trapping nights to bring people together to look at these beautiful, essential creatures and their relationship with our energy system. We loved them, and we think you will too so we want to do more!

1603920407_moth_watch_session_1b_collage.jpg

We've developed an interactive colouring sheet with app Quiver - so you can bring your coloured in moth to life and fly it round the room. We will turn your clips into a huge digital artwork for Glasgow.

We're planning community made solar artworks to power the installation at COP 26 - another way for you to be there!

And we'll provide accessible tools so you can join in at home or in person - with moth packs, online tutorials and in-person solar art workshops

Whatever the future brings, we'll grab this opportunity to take the voice of Plymouth to those with the power to make the changes we need.

Please pledge now and join our 'whisper' for change.
