Supporting Moments Cafe throughout COVID-19
We did it
On 3rd August 2020 we successfully raised £8,666 with 92 supporters in 117 days

Our aim is to be able to reopen our doors to continue the great work that we do at Moments Cafe, to help and support the community.

 New stretch target

We want to be able to continue offering free advice and information to the public during this difficult time, and, once reopened, anyone that comes into Moments Cafe & Community Hub. Our unique location in Plymouth City Centre means we are accessible to all. However, with Moments Cafe (hopefully) temporarily shut, funds are becoming an increasing concern. All funds raised from this Crowdfunder will be used to help us continue supporting people affected by dementia and memory problems in our community, and also the elderly and most vulnerable throughout the COVID-19 crisis. It will also help us reopen Moments Cafe in the future, enabling us to help and support more people in our community as a whole.

The Moments Café team are asking you to support us, while we continue to support you.

A few days after celebrating our 3rd birthday we had to close our doors to help protect our customers and staff from COVID-19. Our customers are always our priority and we are counting down the days until we can open the doors to them once more.

Moments Café, located in Plymouth City Centre, was opened 3 years ago by two ex-mental health nurses, Kate and Laura. They had already established an amazing social enterprise called Memory Matters, which helps and supports people in the community affected by dementia. The café was opened as a retro-style café to create memories for all the customers to enjoy. It is specifically dementia-friendly, which, in turn, makes it a safe, warming, friendly environment for anyone to enjoy!

All of the profits made in Moments Café go towards supporting Memory Matters, and our FREE help and support advice Hub, which is located above the Café.

Before we closed our doors, our Moments staff did all that they could to collect contact details from as many of our customers as possible. We did this so that even though we were closing, we could continue to support them over the phone, and check on them throughout this difficult time. We are making the most vulnerable people and people living on their own our main priority, so that we can get them anything they need, or sign-post them to anyone that may be able to help them.

"I think it's marvellous you are ringing me, it means a lot to hear a friendly voice."

- Cafe customer Joyce, aged 95

We are continuing to support as many people as we can over the phone and online, (including our FREE dementia advice service) however, because the café is closed, we are not gaining any revenue to be able to continue this support once this pandemic is all over. Our Moments Café staff in Plymouth and our Memory Matters Staff in Cornwall are all volunteering their time and not receiving any extra funds for their hard work, and we have a lot of people to support!

Our workshops for people living with dementia in Cornwall are also continuing online, and we have managed to provide tablets and internet access to our clients, who can then happily join in on their weekly workshops as usual. These workshops, held by Memory Matters staff, use Cognitive Stimulation Therapy (CST), which has been proven to slow down the process of memory loss. Please click here to find out more.

“I’m very social and don’t like isolating. I feel so much better now I can see you all”

- Memory Matters Workshop Group member, Jocé

As compassionate and caring individuals, the café staff are desperate to be able to aid our customers in Plymouth as much as possible. We are currently looking into funding for our customers to get tablets too, so they can still see each other for their morning coffees, without it merely just being a chat over the phone. Mental health issues will be rising as this difficult time continues, and we want to make sure we are doing all that we can to keep the vulnerable people in our community connected and feeling loved.

Unfortunately, this funding is not guaranteed, so any funds raised from our Crowdfunder will primarily go towards this becoming a reality, and helping the lonely and vulnerable to be able to communicate face-to-face.

"It means the world having a phone call, I really miss the Cafe and the lovely friendly atmosphere... Not many places would bother, but it shows you see us as part of the family...being able to talk to someone means so much." - Cafe customer, Maureen

These are definitely uncertain times, and we are not sure how long the café will be closed for. We need your help to keep us going so that we can continue to support our customers and our staff.

We are reaching out to you, the general public, who we will continue to support no matter what, to help us with funds to be able to reopen our Moments Café and Memory Matters Hub. This will enable us to resume our support for the general public, and will also enable Memory Matters to continue their FREE Support and Advice Service for people in our community affected by dementia or memory loss.

"Thank you so very much for your welcoming and friendly, attitudes, keeping me aware of all sorts of things, and all of the many things you did to help me and my wife...I do not know how I would have coped, recovered and improved without yourselves, and my wife (Judith)"

 - Steve Cornwell, A member of our Young Onset Dementia Group
