Maths in Schools

Aim

The aim of this Y3 Maths Programme is to bring football and maths together through a 6 week programme to improve mental and physical skills.

Those who take any interest in football will be familiar with its structure at its most senior levels, with the Premier League at its summit under which operates the Championship, League 1 and League 2. But below those 4 leagues is organised a pyramid of mostly semi-professional and amateur competitions at the pinnacle of which is the Enterprise National League (NL). The NL comprises 3 divisions, National league, National League North and National League South.

Some time ago the NL established a Trust which provides funds (made available by the English Premier League and the Professional Footballers’ Association) for its member clubs to set up their own charitable arms, or Trusts, in order to organise and run schemes that might benefit their local communities. Following promotion to the Na6onal League South in 2014 Wealdstone formed its own Foundation and successfully applied to National League Trust for funds to pilot two community based schemes targeted at the upper and lower age ranges – Walking Football for the over-50s and Stones Soccer in Schools for Primary School children in year 3. The schools programme was awarded a £5,000 prize from the Nationall League Trust for being the best schools project in 2018.

For over 100 years Wealdstone Football Club has been a major "non-league" football club based firstly in Harrow and now at Grosvenor Vale in Ruislip. The club has won the three major competitions outside the Football League; the FA Amateur Cup at Wembley in 1966 and, since turning professional in 1971, the Football Conference (now the National League) and, again at Wembley, the FA Challenge Trophy, both in the same season in 1985 and, as such, became the first club to win the “non-league double”. The players are part-time professionals and many have gone on to play as full-timers, notably Stuart Pearce who captained England and Vinny Jones, who captained Wales.

These days Wealdstone is very much a community club with not only the professional team, that plays in front of crowds of approaching 2,000, but also 52 youth teams for 6 to 18 year olds, a ladies team and a walking football section for more mature players!

Wealdstone FC Foundation

The aims and objectives of the foundation is to make available to the local communities served by the parent senior football club, Wealdstone FC, the necessary funds, skill and expertise required to organise and run schemes that might benefit those communities.
The Foundation currently comprises 1 employee and 6 trustee.

Maths in Schools is a maths and football related course for primary school year 3 children that links numeracy maths lessons to activity sessions run by Wealdstone Football Club FA Qualified coaches. The aim is to create an add-on teaching mechanism that, by linking football based activity sessions to the application of mathematics, might help enthuse young school children sufficiently to assist them in absorbing the basics of numeracy in an enjoyable seung. It involves a 45-minute football or activity skills/coaching sessions that are complimented by 45 minutes of football themed numeracy lessons.
