Leslie Community Dig Phase 2

Aim
After our hugely successful first community dig at the Greenside, Leslie in September, we are now fundraising for Phase 2
With huge support from The Skene Trust, Leslie Common Good Fund and Fife Council, but also through our own fundraising, LHG raised £20,500.00 to commission Addyman Archaeology to lead our first community dig. This project came to fruition in September 2025. With 67 local volunteers and 120 local schoolchildren taking part. Phase 1 unearthed enough evidence to suggest further excavations should be focussed on two areas of the Greenside site. One showed evidence of the early settlement, the other showing medieval ecclesiastical pottery.
Leslie Heritage Group are now actively fundraising for Phase 2, this crowd funder is part of that fundraising. In total we are hoping to raise £21,000 in order to complete the second phase of the dig and a further £10,000 for post-excavation investigation of finds by specialists.
Christ Kirk on the Green has been a focal point for Leslie folk for centuries. It was the site of the church, markets and fairs, homes during the war, the gallows for hangings ... the list is endless. The finds made during Phase 1 support this historical information as being correct.
This is a hugely exciting project for the whole community. Working alongside our team of archeaologists, we will once again be looking for enthusiastic local volunteers to get involved. If the funding target can be reached, we aim to carry out Phase 2 in September 2026. Check our website for developments!
We have many other projects in the pipeline, all of which offer an opportunity for the community to be hands on in helping to discover & conserve Leslie's rich heritage.
