KMYC have taken a long term 30 year lease under the Community Empowerment (Scotland) Act 2015, of the former Sea Cadet Hall on the High Street in Stonehaven to provide a place to give a central location in Kincardine and Mearns from which KMYC can operate, providing a space for the regular activities of Stonehaven Youth Club as well as bringing all the KMYC clubs together from time to time.

KMYC has a long-term vision for our youth clubs to be able to provide safe spaces for local young people to hang out, relax with their friends and take part in informal activities and learn vital life skills.

By having a dedicated space the KMYC’s local club in Stonehaven will have the freedom to open multiple evenings a week, providing extended activities and be able to cater for the different ages and needs of groups more effectively. There would also be the potential for running services during the day for those that have left full-time education but need support.

With this dedicated space, the young people will have a sense of ownership of their Youth Club and will be involved in the decisions made in the way it is run, decorated and furnished. With this involvement they will feel empowered and valued, giving them confidence as they move forward in their lives, something that cannot be achieved in rented rooms.

Although the building is old and in need of some care and attention it has huge potential. Having been successful in gaining the 30 year lease for the building via the CAT process in 2024, we now endeavour to improve its facilities. There are capital remedial works required immediately to deal with damp issues in the flat roofed area at the rear as well as to solve the water ingress from the roof. We will also be installing better toilets, including a disabled toilet. The heating and power sources need upgrading and we have planning permission and listed building consent to install solar panels. These works are estimated at a cost of > £250,000

We have been successful in our application for grant funding from the Place Based Investment Fund, being awarded £130,000. This Crowdfunder will supplement that while we seek further grant funding from other sources.
