For 26 years, Drake Sailing has been a safe harbour for people in Plymouth with physical or mental health challenges, providing accessible sailing experiences that foster confidence, independence, and community.
But now, we need your help. We urgently need to acquire our own accessible sailing boat, a Hawk 20.
The Hawk 20 is ideal for our members: safe, stable, and adaptable for people of all abilities. With your support, we hope to raise £8,000 to buy a Hawk 20, secure a mooring, fund repairs, and cover storage—ensuring that we can keep delivering life-changing experiences on the water.
Drake Sailing is so much more than a sailing club. For many of our members, it’s a lifeline.
- A place of calm and healing after illness or trauma
- A way to improve physical health and coordination
- A space for social inclusion, friendship and community
- A welcoming environment that boosts confidence and self-worth
Our sessions are not only therapeutic, but transformative. They help people reclaim joy and purpose—while providing unique volunteer opportunities that give back.
One mum told us:
“Drake sailing was my son's first social activity after a long spell I'm hospital. He was shy and apprehensive on his first trip, however, with the positive friendly support he returned week after week. My son really enjoyed himself he gained confidence with sailing and socially .”
And Peter, a long-serving volunteer, shared:
“Due to a virus causing me a loss of core stability and dexterity I was unable to continue racing. I became aware of Drake Sailing through a mutual acquaintance which helped me considerably not as a “member” but in a “professional” volunteer capacity.
