To celebrate 10 years of Wycombe Refugee Partnership and raise money for a great local charity close to my heart.
I've been volunteering for Wycombe Refugee Partnership for nearly two years since I've been living in Wycombe. They are a local charity who do amazing work with Asylum Seekers and Refugees, helping them through the often very difficult transition to a newly settled life.
For Asylum Seekers who are in limbo while they wait for their claims to be processed, WRP help with access to food poverty support, baby banks, internet access, local transport, education and english language support and more. For those with newly acquired refugee status, they help with finding a job and accommodation including the laying down of first rental deposits, finding furniture donations, helping them settle in the local community by supporting socially through social events and much, much more.
They are ten years old this summer and in celebration are asking people to set themselves challenges around the theme of TEN to raise awareness and money for their work.
I'm hoping to move to Reigate at the end of the summer and this seems like a great way to say farewell and thank you to this wonderful group of people - both the people who run the charity - almost all of it on a voluntary basis - and of course the Asylum seekers and Refugees we support - who are are sadly being vilified in our country way too much at the moment.
On the contrary, I feel only admiration for the people I have met - people who have had to endure things we are lucky enough never to have experienced, who have had to flee their homes to escape war or persecution to a country, culture and language that are completely foreign to them, and who have had to start all over again in very difficult circumstances. They have to dig deep to find resources of courage, bravery and resilience that should make them role models to us all.
So please do sponsor me for this challenge and support this small but really worthwhile charity. I'll post updates each time I do a walk to keep you up to date with my progress!
Thank you so much 🙂
