The aim of a community fridge is to reduce food waste and promote a sense of community by providing free access to good quality food

Our Story 

The Childcare & Community Centres, (formerly YMCA), has been operating in Ashton-in-Makerfield for over 30 years. it is a registered charity and we are asking people of our community to donate to this wonderful project and enable us to keep it running and extend the reach of our community fridge and train new volunteers to help.

We are run by 6 volunteers who are passionate about keeping food from landfill. We collect food from local supermarkets/food outlets in the mornings/evenings.

It is then brought to Hilton Street Community Fridge, booked in and then free for anyone to take, with the aim to reduce food waste from going into landfill,.

We also accept donations from members of the community for food/household items which they do not require, and these can be passed onto someone who does.

We also work with Multibank who supply food, clothing and household items and these items are again free for people to take and use.

We support around 80 families per week with the food and goods we distribute.

Our crowdfunder campaign will allow us to continue this important project, enabling us to collect fresh reuseable food and helping families from all backgrounds within the community.

We are keen to support our Community Fridge Co-ordinator's 4 hour post per week and the hardworking volunteers by continuing to offer travel expenses and need money to keep our 3 fridges and freezers going, our electricity prices have doubled in the past year!
