 New stretch target

Anything above our target will go towards additional equipment that will enable us to serve our customers with delicious, high-quality products. This includes a custom display counter crafted by a local carpenter, a filter coffee machine and a dough laminator so that we can take our cinnamon bun production to the next level!

After an amazing first year baking out of the kitchens at the Devonport Guildhall, we’re ready to take the next step and open a shop of our own! But every bakery needs an oven, so we’re asking for your help to raise the money we need in exchange for some tasty rewards!

An introduction to Heyl

Launched in 2020 by partners Sam and Kate, Heyl Bakery is Plymouth’s first 100% plant-based sourdough bakery. Our ethos is all about celebrating the grain, using locally-milled stoneground flours and slow fermentation processes to produce loaves that are full of flavour and character. We’re also passionate about sustainability, using local, seasonal and organic ingredients wherever possible, and taking steps to minimise our waste and our carbon footprint.

For the last year and a half we’ve been baking out of the kitchens of the historic Devonport Guildhall, popping up at markets and events in and around Plymouth and supplying a growing number of local shops and cafes. In that time we’ve been blown away by the enthusiastic responses our bakes have received, and we now feel ready to take the leap and open a shop of our own. We want this to be a space where we can open our doors to you, so you can see first hand where your loaves and buns have been shaped and baked, before picking one up to take home, or to enjoy with a coffee while you kick back and relax.

Our new home

During our search for a more permanent home for Heyl, it’s always been important to us to find somewhere we could be part of a community and work alongside like-minded makers and producers. So when we came across Alma Yard, we knew we’d found the right place.

Alma is an incredible new development just a short walk from the Barbican, where Eat Work Art are transforming a collection of historic factory buildings into studios and coworking spaces for local creatives and independent businesses. It’s already home to a growing number of printmakers, graphic designers, jewellery makers, a yoga studio and an eco-friendly hairdressers - and hopefully very soon, a bakery!

Why we’re crowdfunding

Everyone knows that the oven is the beating heart of a bakery - but sadly, they don’t come cheap. Which is why we’re asking for your help! By supporting our crowdfunder, you’ll help us raise enough money to buy a new deck oven for the shop.

It may not sound like the sexiest or most exciting thing to spend money on (unless you're a baker!), but aside from our hands, this will be the most important bit of equipment in the bakery. It’s what allows us to supply bread of the highest quality to the amazing local cafes and shops that stock us, to donate loaves to the Union Street Corner soup kitchen, and of course, to bake bread, buns and cookies for you, our wonderful customers.

What your support can help us achieve

By donating to our crowdfunder, you’re not just supporting a bakery, you’re also supporting the wonderful farmers, millers and producers who supply us, and helping us to promote a more sustainable food system here in the South West.

We are proud to work with two local millers based in Devon and Dorset, who take care to source organically and naturally-grown grains for their flours. We’re always looking to source our other ingredients as locally and responsibly as possible too, and are excited by the opportunities to make more progress on this as we grow and develop our range of products.

This commitment to sustainability is also reflected in our decision to go fully plant-based and to work with local cycle couriers to help us minimise our carbon footprint. We also avoid using plastic packaging for any of our products, and will take this a step further in the new shop, minimising the use of any disposable plates, cups or cartons, and using eco-friendly cleaning products to play our part in making Plymouth a more eco-friendly city.

What to expect at the new shop

Our new home will enable us to serve you all your favourite sourdough loaves and plant-based treats straight from our ovens. You’ll be able to drop by and grab a delicious filter coffee, sandwich or topped flatbread, as well as shop for a selection of pantry items from producers we love. And when you’re done stocking up on baked goods, you can also check out some of the amazing art and craftwork being produced by some of our neighbours in the yard.

Thank you!

At Alma Yard, we have an opportunity to join a growing number of exciting independent businesses who are breathing fresh life into the East end of Plymouth. We really hope you’ll lend us your support, and help us take this next big step so that we can bring our bread and sweet bakes to a wider community.
