Aim

The power of community helped us to create Street Rocks indoor climbing centre - now we're asking for help to get us a Moon Board

Coast and Vale Community Action, or CaVCA as we're known locally, is a locally led charitable enterprise that exists to help people to do good things in communities.  We started life at the beginning of the 20th Century as a traditional poverty alleviation charity distributing alms to those in need.  Over the years we have evolved in line with community need.  Today we support people to get involved in their community, to enjoy more opportunities and to tackle shared issues together.

Two years ago, our climbing community began to campaign in earnest for new and improved climbing facilities in Scarborough, as all we had was CaVCA's 10m wall and nothing else for a 50 mile radius.  Through the power of community CaVCA was able to generate the funds required to massively expand the centre, and at the same time create a much more open and welcoming place at The Street than we could ever have imagined :)

Why are we crowdfunding?

Those of us who climb have always known about the benefits of climbing, both physical and cognitive.  We also know about the power of community.  The ability of climbing to forge new connections, develop trust, create resilience, build lasting friendships as well as have fun and get fit - well, this can't be overstated!  We have seen people literally grow within our centre, people who never thought they'd climb, people who were scared to socially interact, lonely isolated and unwell people have seen their lives change as a result of climbing.

We want to make sure our centre is the most inclusive and accessible it can be, whilst also staying true to the ethos of rock climbing and its people.  We want to grow new climbers, and strengthen existing ones.  We want to grow our base of volunteers who ensure our centre is inclusive and there are no barriers to climb.

To do this, we have listened again to our community, and within the new gym space that we have created we are trying to raise the funds to purchase a freestanding Moon Board, a technical training board for climbers.  This will help our good to become great.  This will help more people to become active climbers, and venture outdoors to where the real adventure is. You never know, we might be able to inspire a future Olympic climbing gold medallist to follow in the footsteps of Toby Roberts!

How we’ll spend the money raised

We will spend all the money raised on a Moon Board (see Moonclimbing.com).  This will help all our climbers, new and seasoned, young and old, to improve their skills and technique to make for better climbing.

Community impact

Street Rocks applies the same ethos to all its activities as CaVCA does to its - welcoming, inclusive, accessible and safe, where people can explore their abilities and ideas, make new connections and gain a sense of purpose.

Since opening Street Rocks we have seen a huge increase in climbing locally - understandably.  But where we have made a huge impact is with our inclusive climbing, reaching out to groups currently underrepresented in climbing.  We have three women's groups running, thanks to the success of our two International Women's Day events.  Our team are trained in accessible climbing, so physical disabilities do not have to be a barrier.  Our kids groups have grown from one a week to four a week, with more in the pipeline. We regularly offer free sessions to Andy's Mans Club, our local Mind and the local Carers' charity.  Many of current regular climbers have come through these free sessions.

Street Rocks is housed within the Street which is our flagship community facility.  Within the Street there are a range of other opportunities that local people can get involved in, some delivered by ourselves, many more delivered by other organisations, both permanent tenants and sessional users.  As well as our own Community Garden and community projects supporting social action initiatives, we are also home to a huge range of activities from extreme kickboxing to music making and recording facilities.

The community in and around the Street is ever strengthened by new activities and ventures, and we love to bring new users into the building to broaden the range of who and what is here.  Climbing has hugely contributed to that, and has drawn in new activities such as Yoga and Tai Chi classes, both commonly used by climbers.

How you can play your part

There are four simple ways to help us reach our target, and make this project a reality.

1. Please make a pledge. Don’t delay if you’re going to support us because momentum is key to our success! No contribution is too small, and we appreciate it so much :)

2. Spread the word. Please do share our project on your social media pages and tell the world to get behind us! The more people we reach, the more support we will get.

3. Sponsor our intrepid climbers who are undertaking, for the second time, a 24 hour sponsored climb-a-thon on 25th/26th October 2025
