Aim

Help Hambrook Sports Club make space for women, girls and players with accessibility needs, by redeveloping our pavilion changing rooms.

Who are we?

We're Hambrook Sports Club, home to four football and five cricket teams, five skittles teams, cribbage, darts and pool players, fitness class fans, and social members. We're a not-for-profit community amateur sports club, owned and operated by volunteers. We exist to promote sport and social activities in Hambrook and the surrounding areas in Bristol and South Gloucestershire, helping people get active and improve their wellbeing.

Our girls cricket team, out on the common!

Why are we crowdfunding?

Our pavilion was built (quite literally) by our members in the 1960s. While we are proud that our community came together to build our club, times (and building regs) have moved on, and now our home & away changing room and shared shower don't make space for our female cricket and football players. We'd also like to make our club more inclusive for those with accessibility needs; we want to make our changing rooms step free, and add a lift to the first floor of our pavilion, so everyone can join in on socials (and get a decent view of play from a new, expanded balcony area.)

On top of all this, we've talked to members about their ideas for how we can improve the building; they want to make things better for climate and nature, by adding solar panels & a battery, an air source heat pump, rainwater harvesting for flushing toilets, eaves along the pavilion to give the neighbouring house martins extra nesting sites, and a green roof to help pollinating insects.

If you're applying for extra funding, this is a good place to demonstrate why your project is eligible so refer back to the criteria to help complete this section

How we’ll spend the money raised

We've worked with Place By Design Architects to draw up plans for an improved pavilion, that meets FA and ECB Guidelines for equality in sport. What does this mean?

  • Separate changing rooms for male and female home & away teams (that's four, up from two)
  • An additional separate changing room for referees and linesman (no more getting changed behind a curtain in our skittles alley)
  • Step free access to changing rooms, and toilets that meet accessibility requirements
  • Adding a lift to our function room, so that guests who can't manage the stairs can still be included at parties and social events
  • Extending the upstairs function room, so we can move the skittles alley up there.
  • Adding a balcony so that people can watch matches safely and comfortably, instead of sitting in the council-owned car park.
  • Adding a rainwater harvesting system for flushing toilets, to save 80% of our pavilion water consumption, and reduce pressure on drainage infrastructure during heavy rain
  • Adding solar panels and a battery to generate our own energy, and an air source heat pump, to reduce our club's carbon footprint and our bills.
  • Replacing our roof and upgrading the building insulation, so it's not damp and cold anymore
  • Adding a green roof for pollinating insects, and eaves to provide the local colony of rare house martins additional places to nest each summer.

Working plan for the ground floor of the club to meet FA and ECB Guidelines – no planning permission granted yet and subject to change based on how much funding we can raise.

Community impact

We have over 400 members (and counting!) who bring their families and friends to enjoy our club throughout the year. We  welcome members of the public to use our space for parties and events, and work with the local PTA to run events to raise money for Hambrook Primary School.
