Project by CORNWALL COMMUNITY FOUNDATION
Can you afford to give away some or all of your energy rebate to help people living in poverty in our county?
Transformation Cornwall has teamed up with The Diocese of Truro, The Cornwall and Isles of Scilly Methodist District and Cornwall Faith Forum to encourage those who can, to donate their energy rebate to Poverty Hurts, the Cornwall Community Foundation's cost of living appeal.
Our initial target is £10,000 and there is no minimum donation. While just 25 people giving the full £400 rebate will enable us to reach our target, this campaign aims to inspire thousands of Cornish people to share just part of their rebate and make a tangible difference in our own communities.
ITV Westcountry reported on the campaign in the 6pm news on 18th October
Help local people weather this 'perfect storm'
Funds raised by the Poverty Hurts appeal will provide grants to grassroots charities and community organisations who are facing increased demand for their support due to the rising household costs faced by people across Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly. Cornwall has 17 council wards in the 20% most deprived in England. The cost-of-living crisis is creating a perfect storm for many people in Cornwall.
Tamas Haydu, CEO of Cornwall Community Foundation said, “We know that many families and individuals in the county are finding this year incredibly difficult. The rising cost of living is pushing low-income households into deeper poverty and this is only going to get worse. Support from charities and community groups is vital and donations to the Poverty Hurts appeal will be helping the people in Cornwall who need it most.”
The spirit of ‘One and All’
"This campaign is in the true spirit of ‘One and All'. For many people the support that’s coming for energy bills is desperately needed and won’t be enough. Others don’t need the help and will be able to donate their rebate. If we all pull together like this, we can make a real difference and make sure people get the support they need. Please give all you can!” Bishop Hugh Nelson, Chair of Transformation Cornwall.
Canon Alan Bashforth of Truro Cathedral, who instigated the campaign said “Several parishioners came to me, wondering how to donate their rebate to those who need it most. It’s in the Cornish DNA to be a good neighbour and this campaign makes it so simple to share our resources in the most tangible of ways.’
Revd Loraine Mellor, Chair, Cornwall and Isles of Scilly District, The Methodist Church, said "God’s kingdom economics invites those who have more, to share more. This campaign gives a simple, practical way to do this, and can make a real difference this winter".
Joining forces to move funds to those most in need
This campaign which appeals to ordinary local householders, is part of the wider Crowd Funder Donate the Rebate campaign, focussed on encouraging second homeowners to give their rebates back to Cornish charities tackling poverty. Rob Love, Founder of Crowd Funder, says “Donate the Rebate is simply about moving money from A to B - to those who need it most. We’re thrilled to partner with Transformation Cornwall and hope that thousands of ordinary people from Scilly to the Tamar will get behind their campaign.”
