Malawi cycle ride - job done!
The ride is over and the hard work done. It was certainly a challenge in the heat and hills but the enthusiastic greetings and waving hands of the villagers as we passed by kept a smile on my face! (at least most of the time)
At the end of our cycle challenge we spent four days at African Vision Malawi's base in Chitukula village where we visited some of the programmes the charity supports, including a maternity unit, a school feeding programme, a washroom for girls, and a clean water borehole. I was also interested to meet two tailors who had trained at the training village and learnt how one has now made enough money from tailoring to buy 5 pigs, which he can breed from and sell.
This trip has been both exhilarating and humbling and I feel very privileged to have seen first hand the difference even a small amount of money can make to people's lives in Malawi and the ripple effect of the initial donation out into the wider community. I was pleased to be able to personally contribute by teaching a couple of weaving workshops to local women, skills that they can use to make a small income selling woven goods at the market.
Thank you so much for your support, I can now vouch for the difference it has made.
Till the next time!
Gill
I'm heading to Malawi to take part in an incredible 500km cycle ride to raise funds for a charity that was set up 18 years ago by our good friends here in the UK. African Vision Malawi helps children & vulnerable people in Malawi, by working with communities to develop long-term and sustainable solutions to the welfare of orphans and vulnerable people in key areas of self-sufficiency, health, education and water and sanitation.
The money you donate will support the charity's programmes including training marginalised people so that they can work, supporting women in maternity, and a special needs unit for people with disability. Access to healthcare and education empowers people to become self-sufficient and independent, by giving them a hand up, not a hand out.
We will cycle up to 100km a day, on a variety of terrain, (mainly flat but some very hilly!), engaging with local people as we go and seeing the wonders of Malawi including its magnificent lake. All of the cyclists taking part are paying their own costs to participate, so all of the monies raised go direct to the charity.
Anything you can contribute towards helping me achieve my target will be massively appreciated. Thanks in advance for supporting me, your contribution is truly life changing.
Thank you
