The Churchward County Trust Ltd continues to actively raise awareness of its goal to re-create a Great Western Railway 'County' class 4-4-0 steam locomotive using a mixture of new and original components. We are currently trying to raise £5000 to enable us to finish the production of the locomotive cylinders which we hope to have done at the end of this year. This will enable us to move on to the next phase in 2025.

Churchward County Trust Ltd

The Churchward County Trust Ltd (CCT) was set up in January 2018 as a wholly independent, not-for-profit company (Limited by Guarantee), and was awarded Charitable Status in 2019. Our primary objectives are:

  • To build, operate and maintain a working example of a Churchward ‘County’ class 4-4-0 using a combination of new and existing GWR standard components.
  • To use the CCT’s property and assets to promote public knowledge, education, appreciation and understanding of the historical, scientific and cultural aspects of the locomotive, for the benefit of the public.

Thanks to the Great Western Society several key components have already been donated to the 4-4-0 project including a boiler and a host of other miscellaneous parts including pony wheels. Many others are in the course of manufacture including new frames and cylinders so we have the major components for the building of the locomotive.

Please donate to help create the missing link in Great Western Motive power which was one of the engines that was part of the standardisation programme initiated by G J Churchward.
